A&K Sanctuary, the luxury travel arm of A&K Travel Group, has announced the upcoming launch of Samkani Camp on Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni, scheduled for late 2027. The camp will offer travelers the rare opportunity to stay overnight on the world's largest salt flat, combining the stark beauty of the landscape with five-star comfort.

Samkani, which translates to "the one who dreams" in the local Aymara language, will feature five architect-designed Airstream suites and a central dining and lounge area. The camp is designed to provide privacy and solitude, with each suite positioned to maximize the vast, open views of the salt flat. The Salar de Uyuni spans approximately 12,000 square kilometers, and during the rainy season, a thin layer of water transforms the surface into a giant mirror, creating a surreal, reflective landscape.

Design and sustainability

The Airstream suites are part of A&K's commitment to low-impact mobile camps, which have been a hallmark of the company's expeditions in remote regions. Each suite is self-sufficient and designed to blend seamlessly with the environment, featuring interiors with blue Bolivian marble and chrome details. The camp's design aims to connect guests with the landscape without sacrificing luxury, ensuring a comfortable retreat in one of the most isolated places on Earth.

"We are thrilled to introduce Samkani Camp as part of our Sanctuary collection," said a spokesperson for A&K Travel Group. "This camp allows our guests to experience the Salar de Uyuni in a way that few have before, with the comfort and service that A&K is known for."

Experiences and itineraries

Guests at Samkani Camp will have access to over 30 exclusive experiences, including visits to hidden islands and volcanic caves, guided by A&K's knowledgeable Bolivian team. The camp will be available as part of A&K's Tailormade or Small Group Journeys to Bolivia, offering a unique addition to the country's tourism offerings.

The launch of Samkani Camp comes at a time when luxury travel is increasingly focusing on remote and immersive destinations. For travel professionals, this represents a new opportunity to offer clients a once-in-a-lifetime experience in South America. The camp's design and location are expected to appeal to high-end travelers seeking privacy and adventure.

Bolivia's tourism sector has been growing, and the Salar de Uyuni is already a popular destination for day trips. However, overnight stays directly on the salt flat are rare, making Samkani Camp a distinctive addition to the market. The camp's opening is anticipated to generate interest among luxury travel agents and tour operators looking to expand their South American portfolios.

For those in the industry, the development of Samkani Camp underscores a broader trend of luxury camps and lodges in remote destinations, similar to recent openings in Africa and Asia. As travel continues to rebound, such offerings are likely to attract discerning travelers seeking unique experiences.

A&K Travel Group has a long history of operating in challenging environments, from the Himalayas to the Antarctic. The Samkani Camp is a natural extension of this expertise, bringing the company's signature style to the Bolivian altiplano.

Travel advisors and operators can expect more details on booking and itineraries as the opening date approaches. In the meantime, the announcement has already sparked interest among luxury travel circles, with many eager to add this new destination to their offerings.
