Air Canada is expanding its transatlantic network with a new seasonal nonstop service linking Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to Shannon Airport (SNN) in Ireland. The route will operate from June through October 2027, giving Canadian travellers a direct gateway to Ireland's west coast during the peak summer travel season.

The announcement comes as Canada-Ireland travel demand continues to climb, with visitor numbers between the two countries rising 35% over the past three years. Tourism Ireland has identified Canada as one of its top five international source markets, and the new service is expected to accelerate that growth.

Strategic connectivity for the west of Ireland

Shannon Airport is the primary international gateway for the Wild Atlantic Way, the world's longest defined coastal touring route. The new flights will provide convenient access for Canadian holidaymakers to iconic attractions such as the Cliffs of Moher and the Ring of Kerry, as well as the region's growing culinary scene, which ranges from Michelin-starred restaurants to traditional pubs serving Irish Coffee.

Beyond leisure travel, the route is poised to benefit the golf tourism sector. Shannon's catchment area includes renowned courses at Lahinch, Ballybunion, and Adare Manor, which is set to host the 2027 Ryder Cup. The timing of the service aligns with the tournament, offering Canadian golf enthusiasts a direct link to one of the sport's most anticipated events.

Tourism Ireland's Country Director for Canada, Sandra Bailey Moffatt, highlighted the importance of the new link: "Air Canada's announcement of a new nonstop route strengthens connectivity between our countries, making it easier for returning and new holidayseekers to experience what Ireland has to offer."

The route also opens up the cities of Limerick, Galway, and Cork, each with distinct cultural and historical draws. For travel professionals, the service adds a valuable option for clients seeking to explore Ireland beyond the traditional Dublin-centric itineraries.

Air Canada's move follows its earlier announcement of a first-ever nonstop Toronto-Oslo service, also slated for 2027, signalling a broader strategy to diversify transatlantic offerings from its Toronto hub. The carrier continues to leverage its position as Canada's largest airline to capture demand in underserved markets.

For tour operators and travel agents, the Toronto-Shannon route simplifies access to the west of Ireland, reducing the need for connections through Dublin or other European hubs. It also aligns with growing interest in regional and authentic travel experiences, a trend that has been reshaping Irish tourism marketing.

Shannon Airport has been actively courting North American carriers, and this new service underscores its role as a viable alternative to Dublin for transatlantic arrivals. The airport's location on the west coast makes it an ideal entry point for self-drive holidays along the Wild Atlantic Way, a product that has gained popularity among Canadian travellers.

Industry observers will be watching to see if Air Canada expands the service to year-round operations if demand warrants. For now, the seasonal schedule reflects a careful balance between capacity and market potential, a strategy that has become increasingly common as carriers manage post-pandemic growth.

Travel advisors should note that the route will be bookable through major GDS systems, including Amadeus, Sabre, and Travelport, ensuring seamless integration into existing booking workflows. The service is expected to be particularly attractive for FIT travellers and small-group tours focused on Ireland's west coast.

As the 2027 Ryder Cup approaches, anticipation is building for a surge in golf-related travel to the region. The Toronto-Shannon flight, combined with the tournament's draw, positions Shannon as a key gateway for North American sports tourism.
