Air Canada and Airbus are deepening their commitment to decarbonizing aviation with a new Sustainability Co-Investment Platform designed to accelerate domestic production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The joint initiative will invest up to $10 million CAD (approximately $137 million CAD) to push a Canadian SAF project toward a final investment decision, with both companies working alongside federal and provincial government partners to establish supportive policy frameworks.

The partnership addresses a critical bottleneck in the aviation industry's net-zero roadmap: the limited availability and high cost of SAF at scale. By co-investing in early-stage production, Air Canada and Airbus aim to de-risk the development of a commercial-scale SAF industry in Canada, which currently lags behind regions like Europe and the United States in renewable fuel output.

Corporate Travel and Fleet Strategy Align

Valerie Durand, Vice President of Airport Affairs, Corporate Real Estate, and Sustainability at Air Canada, emphasized the dual benefit for corporate clients and the environment. “Through this joint initiative with Airbus, we are taking meaningful steps towards supporting domestic SAF production, helping corporate customers address emissions associated with business travel,” she said. The platform builds on Air Canada’s Leave Less Travel Programme, which allows corporate partners to purchase SAF environmental attributes. Airbus has already committed to buying such attributes for over 60,000 litres of SAF through the program.

The SAF push complements Air Canada’s broader fleet modernization strategy, which includes the introduction of more fuel-efficient aircraft such as the Airbus A321XLR and the Airbus A220. These next-generation jets, combined with SAF usage, are central to the carrier’s plan to reduce life-cycle emissions from its operations.

Airbus Chief Sustainability Officer Julie Kitcher highlighted the macroeconomic potential of scaling domestic SAF. “Scaling domestic SAF could add $32 billion CAD to Canada’s GDP and create 140,000 jobs by 2040,” she said. The comment underscores the dual economic and environmental rationale for the investment, which aligns with the aviation industry’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The initiative also reinforces Airbus’s broader footprint in Canada. The manufacturer’s operations already generate an estimated $8.4 billion GDP impact across the Canadian economy, as noted in a recent economic impact study. The new SAF platform is expected to further integrate Airbus’s supply chain with Canadian renewable fuel producers.

For travel industry professionals, the development signals a growing willingness among major airlines and OEMs to co-fund infrastructure that has long been considered too capital-intensive for private-sector alone. The partnership could serve as a template for similar co-investment models in other markets where SAF production remains nascent.

Air Canada and Airbus are also coordinating with government agencies to craft policies that ensure the availability and affordability of renewable fuels for the Canadian aerospace sector. This includes potential tax incentives, blending mandates, and grants that could lower the cost barrier for airlines and corporate buyers alike.

The move comes as corporate travel buyers increasingly demand verifiable emissions reductions from their airline partners. By tying SAF procurement directly to corporate travel programs, Air Canada is positioning itself to capture a share of the growing market for sustainable business travel solutions.
