Austrian Airlines is elevating its onboard dining with a new seasonal wine program, partnering with 34 Austrian wineries to curate a rotating selection served on flights from October 2026 through August 2027. The initiative was unveiled at the Austrian Airlines Wine Event 2026, held at Vienna Airport, where winemakers presented their vintages directly to media, sales partners, and airline staff.
The program is structured around four seasonal cycles—autumn, winter, spring, and summer—ensuring that passengers experience a changing portfolio that reflects Austria's diverse wine culture. The selection spans classic varieties such as Grüner Veltliner, Muskateller, and Blaufränkisch, alongside lesser-known grapes like Rotgipfler, Zierfandler, and Neuburger, offering a broad taste of the country's viticultural heritage.
Wine as a cultural ambassador
Annette Mann, CEO of Austrian Airlines, emphasized the airline's commitment to showcasing Austrian excellence at altitude. "We are particularly pleased to be working with 34 renowned Austrian wineries, giving their wines the opportunity to shine at 10,000 metres," she said. The airline's wine experts, trained in sensory evaluation, will enhance the passenger experience by sharing the stories behind each bottle, turning a simple drink into a cultural journey.
The Austrian Wine Marketing Board has been a longstanding partner in this endeavor, supporting both the wine program and the training of Austrian Wine Experts. This collaboration not only brings Austrian wines to the skies but also offers a taste of the nation's culinary heritage to travelers worldwide.
For travel professionals, this move underscores a broader trend of carriers using local sourcing to differentiate their premium cabins. Austrian Airlines joins a growing list of airlines that are partnering with regional producers to create unique onboard experiences. Similar initiatives have been seen across the industry, from LOT Polish Airlines' new route to Bangkok to Malaysia Airlines' expanded codeshare with China Southern, as carriers seek to strengthen their brand identity through local partnerships.
The seasonal approach also aligns with consumer demand for variety and authenticity. By rotating the wine list, Austrian Airlines keeps the offering fresh for frequent flyers, while also giving smaller wineries a platform to reach an international audience. The program is expected to be a talking point for business-class passengers, who often view onboard dining as a key differentiator when choosing an airline.
For agents and tour operators, the wine program adds a compelling selling point for Austrian Airlines' long-haul routes, particularly those connecting Vienna with North America and Asia. The airline's hub at Vienna International Airport serves as a gateway to Central and Eastern Europe, and the wine initiative reinforces Austria's position as a premium travel destination.
As the travel industry continues to recover, such partnerships between airlines and local producers are likely to become more common. Austrian Airlines' wine program is a prime example of how carriers can leverage regional strengths to enhance the passenger experience while supporting local economies. The airline's investment in wine expertise also signals a commitment to service quality that goes beyond the standard in-flight meal.
With the first cycle set to launch in October 2026, Austrian Airlines is already generating buzz among wine enthusiasts and travel professionals alike. The program is a testament to the airline's dedication to showcasing the best of Austria, one glass at a time.
