Contour Airlines has announced a new nonstop route linking St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands with St. Maarten, set to commence on October 5, 2026. The service will operate between Cyril E. King Airport (STT) and Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM), providing a direct air link between two of the northeastern Caribbean’s most frequented destinations.

The route is designed to enhance intra-regional connectivity, supporting both leisure tourism and business travel. Ben Munson, President of Contour Airlines, stated: “This new nonstop service between St. Thomas and St. Maarten reflects our ongoing commitment to providing convenient, reliable, and comfortable air travel options across the region.”

Strengthening Caribbean Links

Local government and tourism leaders have expressed strong support for the new connection. Jennifer Matarangas-King, Commissioner of Tourism for the U.S. Virgin Islands, emphasized the route’s role in deepening cultural and commercial ties between the islands. Michael Cleaver, CEO of Princess Juliana International Airport, praised Contour’s investment, noting that “every new route strengthens the connectivity that is so vital to island communities.”

Flights will be offered twice weekly, on Mondays and Fridays, with a morning departure from St. Thomas and an early-afternoon return from St. Maarten. Contour will deploy its 30-seat regional jet aircraft, featuring extra legroom and complimentary snacks — a configuration that appeals to both business travelers and tourists seeking a comfortable short-haul experience.

This expansion is part of Contour Airlines’ broader push to grow its Caribbean network. The carrier has been steadily adding routes that link smaller island markets, often underserved by larger airlines. The St. Thomas–St. Maarten corridor joins a portfolio that includes services from regional hubs to destinations such as San Juan, Puerto Rico, and other Caribbean islands.

For travel professionals, the new route opens opportunities for packaged itineraries combining the U.S. Virgin Islands and St. Maarten, two destinations with distinct appeal — St. Thomas known for its duty-free shopping and beaches, St. Maarten for its dual Dutch-French culture and vibrant nightlife. Tour operators and travel agents can leverage the direct connection to create multi-island trips that were previously more cumbersome via connecting flights.

The move also reflects a broader trend of regional carriers filling gaps left by legacy airlines, which have reduced short-haul Caribbean flying in favor of longer, more profitable routes. Contour’s focus on comfort and reliability positions it as a viable partner for corporate travel managers and MICE planners seeking efficient inter-island transport.

As the travel industry continues to recover and evolve, such targeted route additions are critical for sustaining tourism flows and supporting local economies. The St. Thomas–St. Maarten service is expected to stimulate visitor spending on both islands and strengthen the overall connectivity of the northeastern Caribbean.
