Emirates is raising the bar in premium economy with the introduction of the industry's first electrically powered seats in this cabin class, debuting on its newly delivered Airbus A350s. The Gulf carrier's latest innovation centers on a full-height privacy divider that passengers can raise or lower at the touch of a button, a feature previously reserved for business and first class cabins.

The new premium economy cabin on the A350 is configured in a 2-3-2 layout, with just 28 seats, ensuring a more spacious and exclusive feel. Each seat is equipped with the UDream headrest by Safran Seats, upholstered in leather for enhanced neck and head support, along with a manually deployable footrest. The electric privacy screen, which extends to the full height of the seat, allows travelers to create a private cocoon for dining, working, or relaxing, according to the airline.

Technology and comfort converge

Beyond privacy, Emirates has integrated a suite of tech-forward amenities. Passengers will find wireless charging pads and USB-C ports, as well as a tray table with an integrated phone holder, enabling personal devices to function as a second screen. The 13.3-inch 4K HDR touchscreen offers access to Emirates' award-winning ice in-flight entertainment system, which now includes enhanced external camera views on the A350 for a more immersive journey.

The premium economy service extends to the culinary experience, with gourmet meals served on fine china and a selection of premium beverages. This rollout is part of Emirates' broader strategy to expand its premium economy product across its fleet, following its initial introduction in 2022. The airline has been progressively adding the cabin to its Boeing 777s and Airbus A380s, and the A350 marks the latest platform for this premium offering.

Industry observers note that Emirates' move could pressure rival carriers to accelerate their own premium economy enhancements. The electric privacy screen, in particular, addresses a growing demand for personal space among long-haul travelers, a trend underscored by recent data showing a surge in premium travel bookings in markets like Singapore.

Emirates' A350s are slated for deployment on regional and medium-haul routes, with the first aircraft entering service later this year. The airline has not yet confirmed which specific routes will feature the new premium economy seats, but executives have hinted at a phased rollout across its network.

This development comes as Emirates continues to invest heavily in its product and service offerings, aiming to maintain its competitive edge in the premium travel segment. The airline's commitment to innovation is evident in this latest seat design, which sets a new benchmark for comfort and privacy in premium economy.

For travel professionals, the introduction of electric privacy screens in premium economy could influence booking patterns, as business travelers and affluent leisure passengers seek greater seclusion without the price tag of business class. Emirates' move may also prompt other carriers to reconsider their own premium economy configurations, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape in the coming years.
