Explora Journeys has confirmed that Explora III, the brand’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered ultra-luxury ship, has successfully completed its third round of sea trials in the Mediterranean. The 72,810 GT vessel, built by Fincantieri at the Sestri Ponente yard near Genoa, validated its technical and nautical performance under real-world conditions, keeping it on schedule for a debut later this year.

The milestone brings the MSC Group-owned brand halfway toward its planned six-ship fleet. With Explora I and Explora II already in service, Explora III will join in 2026, followed by Explora IV and Explora V in 2027 and Explora VI in 2028. Once Explora III enters service, the brand will operate three ships simultaneously for the first time.

LNG Propulsion and Emissions Strategy

Explora III is the first vessel in the fleet to run on LNG, offering immediate emissions reductions compared to conventional marine fuels. The ship is also designed to accommodate renewable alternatives such as bio-LNG and synthetic LNG as they become commercially viable, aligning with the company’s target of net-zero maritime emissions by 2050. All subsequent newbuilds—Explora IV, V, and VI—will also feature LNG capability, with Explora V and VI additionally prepared for advanced fuel cell technology that converts LNG into hydrogen to cut emissions while in port.

For guests, the propulsion shift delivers the same ultra-elegant onboard experience with a lighter environmental footprint, backed by continuous innovation behind the scenes.

Inaugural Itineraries: Mediterranean Prelude, Naming, and Maiden Voyage

Following sea trials, Explora III has returned to Fincantieri’s yard for interior outfitting and final finishing. The inaugural sequence unfolds in three stages:

  • Mediterranean Prelude Journey – 24–29 July 2026: A five-night sailing from Genoa to Civitavecchia (Rome) via Marseille, Saint-Tropez, Villefranche-sur-Mer (Nice), and Livorno, designed as an intimate first look at the new ship.
  • Official Naming Ceremony – 1 August 2026: Explora III will arrive in Barcelona, where it will be officially named at MSC Group’s new cruise terminal.
  • Seven-Night Maiden Journey – from 3 August 2026: Two days after the naming, the ship will depart Barcelona on a seven-night maiden voyage to Lisbon, formally opening its first full season.

Explora Journeys president Anna Nash described the sea-trial milestone as proof of the brand’s momentum and its “conscious approach to luxury ocean travel,” emphasizing that Explora III embodies both thoughtful innovation and a commitment to exceptional guest experiences.

Inaugural Season: From Fjords to Fall Foliage

After its Mediterranean debut, Explora III will head north for a deeply scenic inaugural season. The ship will sail through Norway’s fjords, Iceland, and Greenland, offering long daylight hours, dramatic coastlines, and wildlife-rich itineraries across Northern Europe. Later in the year, it will cross the Atlantic to explore New England and Canada’s East Coast during the autumn months, pairing Explora’s design-driven onboard experience with fall foliage, historic ports, and coastal towns.

Each itinerary is framed as a “Journey” rather than a cruise, with an emphasis on slower travel, longer stays, and curated access in port—continuing the brand’s aim to make the ocean itself feel like the destination.

For travel professionals, the launch of Explora III signals a new phase in ultra-luxury cruising, combining lower-emission technology with the brand’s signature intimate, design-focused experience. As Explora Journeys expands its fleet, agents and operators can expect increased capacity for high-end itineraries across the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and the Americas.
