Nobu Hospitality has announced its latest European expansion, unveiling plans for a luxury resort in Portugal's Eastern Algarve. The development, set within the Monte Rei estate, will include a 100-room Nobu Hotel, a signature Nobu restaurant, and 21,000 square metres of villas and branded residences. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the first guests expected in 2029.
The project sits on more than 1,000 acres of countryside centred around the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. Nobu's design philosophy will be integrated with the natural landscape, aiming to create a destination that feels deeply connected to the region. Trevor Horwell, CEO of Nobu Hospitality, said, "Together with Norfin, we have the opportunity to create a distinctive Nobu destination that feels deeply connected to the Eastern Algarve."
Part of a larger investment programme
The development is part of a broader investment programme led by Norfin, which includes hospitality, residential living, and leisure amenities. Miguel Mateus, CEO of Norfin, highlighted the significance of the partnership: "Our partnership with Nobu is central to delivering that ambition. It introduces one of the world's most recognised luxury hospitality brands to the Eastern Algarve."
An international design team, including DSA Architects and the Rockwell Group, has been appointed to shape the project. The team will work to blend Nobu's understated design ethos with Monte Rei's landscape and the character of the Eastern Algarve, enhancing the resort's international appeal while preserving its privacy and authenticity.
The Algarve has been gaining traction among luxury travellers and golf enthusiasts. The region recently hosted the first European event of the PGA Tour Champions, further cementing its status as a premium destination. Nobu's entry is expected to attract high-net-worth individuals seeking exclusive experiences in a tranquil setting.
Nobu Hospitality, co-founded by chef Nobu Matsuhisa and actor Robert De Niro, operates hotels, restaurants, and residences worldwide. The brand is known for its fusion of Japanese cuisine with local ingredients and its minimalist yet luxurious design. This project marks Nobu's second venture in Portugal, following a hotel in Lisbon that opened in 2021.
The Eastern Algarve remains less developed than the western part of the region, offering a more authentic and secluded environment. The Monte Rei estate already features a golf course, a clubhouse, and a handful of private villas. The addition of a Nobu-branded resort is expected to elevate the area's profile among international luxury travellers.
Industry observers note that the Algarve's appeal is broadening beyond sun-and-beach tourism. The region is increasingly attracting golfers, foodies, and wellness seekers. Nobu's combination of fine dining, luxury accommodation, and golf aligns with these trends. The project also reflects a growing appetite for branded residences in Europe, particularly in destinations with strong leisure appeal.
Norfin, a Portuguese real estate investment and asset management firm, has been active in the Algarve for years. The company's investment programme includes several hospitality and residential projects. The partnership with Nobu is a key component of its strategy to position Monte Rei as a world-class resort destination.
The design team will focus on integrating the built environment with the natural surroundings. DSA Architects, based in Lisbon, has experience with luxury hospitality projects in Portugal and abroad. Rockwell Group, founded by David Rockwell, is known for its work on Nobu hotels and restaurants globally. The collaboration aims to create a seamless indoor-outdoor experience that reflects the Algarve's light, landscape, and culture.
Nobu's expansion in Portugal comes as the country continues to attract international hotel brands. The luxury segment has seen growth in both Lisbon and the Algarve, with new openings from groups such as Six Senses, Anantara, and Viceroy. The Algarve's year-round mild climate and direct flights from major European cities make it a convenient option for short-haul luxury breaks.
For travel professionals, the development signals new opportunities for high-end bookings in a region that is still relatively under-supplied in the luxury segment. The combination of a renowned brand, a championship golf course, and a secluded location could appeal to affluent clients seeking exclusivity and authenticity.
