Philippine Airlines (PAL) has officially selected GE Aerospace's GEnx-1B engines to power its upcoming fleet of 15 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, with options for five more aircraft. The announcement, made during a signing ceremony in Farnborough, England, reinforces a commercial relationship that has endured for more than five decades.

The GEnx-1B engine is recognized across the industry for its reliability and efficiency. According to GE Aerospace, the engine achieves a 99.98% dispatch reliability rate and remains on-wing three times longer than competing powerplants. Mohamed Ali, President and CEO of GE Aerospace Commercial Engines and Services, cited the engine's "proven reliability, fuel efficiency, and strong operating performance" as decisive factors in PAL's choice.

Strategic Fleet Expansion

Lucio C Tan III, President and Chief Operating Officer of PAL Holdings Inc, expressed confidence that the GEnx engines will enhance the airline's operational performance and improve the travel experience for passengers. PAL, the Philippines' flag carrier, operates a full-service network covering 29 domestic and 40 international destinations. The new Dreamliners are expected to support the carrier's ongoing network expansion, particularly on long-haul routes to North America, Europe, and the Middle East.

The GEnx-1B engine has accumulated over 50 million flight hours in just over 14 years, setting a record for GE Aerospace's commercial widebody engine family. This milestone reflects the engine's ability to operate in some of the world's most demanding environments, thanks to advances in turbine blade and combustor coating technology.

PAL's decision comes as the airline continues to modernize its fleet and strengthen its competitive position in the global aviation market. The carrier has been actively expanding its international network, including recent interline partnerships such as the one with Solomon Airlines that offers through check-in for passengers. Additionally, PAL has been running promotional campaigns like its flash sale offering up to 40% off across Southeast Asia to stimulate demand.

The partnership with GE Aerospace is expected to play a crucial role in PAL's growth strategy, ensuring the airline remains competitive in terms of fuel efficiency and operational reliability. The GEnx-1B's performance metrics are particularly relevant as carriers worldwide face rising fuel costs and pressure to reduce carbon emissions.

Industry observers note that the choice of engine can significantly impact an airline's bottom line. The GEnx-1B's extended on-wing time reduces maintenance intervals and associated costs, while its fuel efficiency helps offset volatile jet fuel prices. For PAL, which operates a mix of narrowbody and widebody aircraft, standardizing on GE engines across its Dreamliner fleet simplifies maintenance and parts inventory.

The order also reflects broader trends in the aviation industry, where airlines are increasingly prioritizing reliability and total cost of ownership over upfront pricing. As carriers like PAL invest in next-generation aircraft, engine selection becomes a strategic decision that affects network planning, route profitability, and customer satisfaction.

With the new Dreamliners expected to enter service in the coming years, PAL is positioning itself to capture growth in key markets while maintaining the service standards expected of a full-service carrier. The airline's commitment to the GEnx-1B engine underscores its confidence in GE Aerospace's technology and support infrastructure.
