Qatar Airways Group has taken its first step into Japan's aircraft leasing market, securing a Japanese Operating Lease with Call Option (JOLCO) for three Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The deal, supported by HSBC and JP Lease Products & Services Co Ltd (JLPS), marks a strategic diversification of the carrier's funding sources and deepens its financial ties across Asia.

HSBC acted as debt arranger and sole lender on the transaction, while JLPS structured and managed the JOLCO equity. This is the first of three planned JOLCO deals that will cover a total of seven aircraft, establishing a recurring presence for Qatar Airways in the Japanese financing market.

Why JOLCO matters for Qatar Airways

JOLCO structures are a well-established financing tool in Japan, offering airlines access to a deep pool of investor capital. For Qatar Airways, entering this market signals confidence in its credit profile and provides a long-term funding alternative to traditional bank loans and export credit agency support.

Hamad AlKhater, CEO of Qatar Airways Group, highlighted the strategic importance of the JOLCO market as a sustainable funding source. "We expect to maintain a consistent presence as we finance future fleet investments and growth opportunities," he said.

The move comes as the Doha-based carrier continues to expand its network and modernise its fleet. The 787-9s are part of a broader order book that includes the Boeing 777X and Airbus A350, and the airline has been actively adding capacity on key long-haul routes.

Japanese investors have traditionally favoured airlines with strong balance sheets and reliable cash flows. Teiji Ishikawa, President and CEO of JP Lease Products & Services, noted that "Japanese investors look first at the credit of the airline. Qatar Airways is a strong credit, and investors in Japan welcome this transaction."

Abdul Hakeem Mostafawi, CEO of HSBC Qatar, emphasised the bank's role in supporting the airline's fleet expansion. "Our role as debt arranger and sole lender in this transaction demonstrates our sector expertise," he said.

The JOLCO programme is part of a wider strategy to diversify funding sources and build long-term relationships with financial institutions globally. Qatar Airways has previously tapped export credit agencies, commercial bank loans, and capital markets, and the Japanese leasing market adds another layer of flexibility.

Industry observers note that the airline's entry into JOLCO could pave the way for other Gulf carriers to follow suit, given the competitive pricing and investor appetite for high-quality aviation assets. The structure also allows airlines to retain operational flexibility while transferring some ownership risks.

For travel professionals, the deal underscores the importance of robust financing in supporting fleet growth and route expansion. As Qatar Airways continues to add destinations and frequencies, its ability to secure cost-effective capital will be a key competitive advantage.

The airline's recent network moves include new services to destinations across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, and it has been actively courting Indian MICE buyers to boost business travel. The JOLCO financing will help underpin these growth plans.

With the first transaction closed, Qatar Airways is expected to finalise the remaining two JOLCO deals in the coming months, covering the additional four aircraft. The programme is a clear signal of the airline's financial resilience and its commitment to innovative funding mechanisms.
