Qatar Airways has confirmed plans to add Western Sydney International Airport to its Australian network, with direct flights from Doha commencing on 15 December 2027. The three-times-weekly service will operate from Hamad International Airport, giving travellers from the region access to the carrier's network of more than 170 destinations.
Western Sydney will become the airline's seventh Australian gateway, joining Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra. The route will be flown with Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, configured with the carrier's award-winning Qsuite business class product.
Strategic expansion for the Australia market
Qatar Airways Group CEO Hamad Al Khater described the launch as "the next chapter in our long-standing partnership with Australia, one of our most important markets." He highlighted the route's potential to stimulate trade, tourism and investment between Australia, Qatar and beyond.
The new service aligns with the broader growth strategy of the Qatar Airways–Virgin Australia partnership, which has been expanding codeshare and frequent-flyer cooperation. For Australian travellers, the additional gateway improves access to international connections via Doha, particularly for those in the fast-growing western Sydney region.
Simon Hickey, CEO of Western Sydney International Airport, welcomed the announcement, noting the airport's 24-hour operating capability as a key advantage for airlines and passengers alike. "Qatar Airways' decision to launch here underscores the demand for premium international connectivity in this region," he said.
Flight schedules show departures from Doha every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with return flights from Western Sydney operating on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Tickets will be available for purchase from 19 December 2026 through the Qatar Airways website and mobile app, with Privilege Club members earning and redeeming Qmiles on the new route.
The move comes as Qatar Airways continues to deepen its footprint in the Asia-Pacific region. The airline has been adding capacity across Australia, and this new route is expected to support both leisure and corporate travel demand. Western Sydney's growing population and business base make it an attractive catchment, and the airport's modern facilities are designed to handle long-haul widebody operations efficiently.
Industry observers note that the December 2027 start date gives the airline and airport ample time to prepare, including marketing campaigns and ground handling arrangements. The route also complements existing services from Doha to other Australian cities, offering more flexibility for connecting itineraries.
For travel agents and corporate buyers, the new flights provide additional options for clients travelling between Australia and the Middle East, Europe and Africa. The Qsuite product, with its sliding doors and convertible quad seats, remains a differentiator in the premium cabin segment.
Qatar Airways' expansion at Western Sydney is part of a wider trend of Gulf carriers increasing their presence in Australia. The airline's partnership with Virgin Australia has already expanded codeshare coverage, and this new route is expected to further integrate the two carriers' networks.
With bookings opening in late 2026, the airline is likely to offer introductory fares to stimulate early demand. The 24-hour airport operation also allows for flexible scheduling, which could be leveraged for future frequency increases if demand warrants.
