Queenstown Airport has created a new executive position to steer its long-term development, appointing Terri-Ann Scorer as Chief of Strategy and Transformation. The move signals the airport's intent to balance infrastructure investment with enhanced passenger experience and environmental commitments as it prepares for future growth in one of New Zealand's most popular tourism gateways.

Scorer, who takes up the role in late November, brings a blend of corporate strategy and governance experience from senior roles at BNZ, Westpac New Zealand, Boston Consulting Group, and Oxfam New Zealand. Her most recent leadership post was as Chair and President of Tennis New Zealand, where she oversaw a major transformation programme.

Chief Executive Shane O'Hare said Scorer's track record made her the right fit for the airport's evolving priorities. "Terri-Ann is one of New Zealand's most accomplished strategy and transformation leaders," he said. "She understands the importance of balancing strategic ambition with strong governance."

The appointment comes as Queenstown Airport continues to upgrade its infrastructure to accommodate rising passenger numbers and seasonal peaks. The airport has been investing in terminal improvements and operational efficiency, while also pursuing sustainability targets. Earlier this year, the airport's Airport House office building was designed to achieve a 5 Green Star rating, underscoring its environmental focus.

Strategic growth and sustainability

Scorer's mandate will include aligning the airport's capital projects with its long-term vision, ensuring that growth is managed responsibly. Her experience in leading organisational change is expected to help the airport navigate the complexities of expansion while maintaining service quality.

"Queenstown Airport plays a critical role in connecting people and supporting economic prosperity," Scorer said. "I'm excited to contribute to the region's future and to ensure the airport continues to deliver long-term value whilst adhering to its core values."

The airport is a key gateway for international visitors to the South Island, with direct services from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Sydney, among others. The region's tourism economy relies heavily on air connectivity, and the airport's strategy will need to account for both leisure and business travel demand.

Industry observers note that airport leadership appointments focused on strategy and transformation are becoming more common as airports worldwide grapple with post-pandemic recovery, sustainability mandates, and technology adoption. Queenstown's move mirrors trends seen at other regional airports, such as Bristol Airport's recent expansion of on-site renewable generation and the broader push for greener operations across the sector.

Scorer's governance background, including her time at Tennis New Zealand, is particularly relevant given the airport's need to work with multiple stakeholders, including airlines, local government, and community groups. Her ability to build consensus will be tested as the airport plans for future capacity.

Queenstown Airport has also been exploring ways to improve the passenger journey, from check-in to boarding, and to integrate digital tools that streamline operations. The new strategy role will likely oversee these initiatives, ensuring they align with the airport's financial and environmental goals.

With Scorer's appointment, Queenstown Airport is positioning itself for a period of sustained development. Her combination of corporate strategy, transformation leadership, and governance experience is expected to help the airport deliver on its promises to investors, airlines, and the local community.
