Red Sea Global (RSG) has finalized the modernization of Al Wajh International Airport in northwest Saudi Arabia, a project that expands the facility’s capacity from 100,000 to 500,000 passengers per year. The upgrade, part of RSG’s broader infrastructure mandate, positions the airport to handle international flights for the first time, strengthening connectivity to the Red Sea coast and the upcoming AMAALA luxury wellness destination.
Airport Capacity and Route Expansion
The renovated terminal now accommodates commercial aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families. Saudia currently operates three weekly flights from Riyadh and two from Jeddah, with plans to add international routes. The increased capacity supports regional tourism and economic growth, particularly for the Tabuk province.
John Pagano, Group CEO of RSG, emphasized the broader significance: “This project is about far more than an airport terminal. It’s about creating a gateway that connects people, supports economic growth, and opens new opportunities for communities across the region.”
Passenger Facilities and Design
The upgrade includes two premium lounges, coffee shops, and car rental services. The terminal’s design draws inspiration from local architecture in Al Wajh and the Tabuk coastline, reflecting the region’s authentic character. These enhancements aim to improve the passenger experience for both leisure and business travelers.
Abdulaziz Al-Abdan, Executive Director of Aviation and Airport Operations at RSG, noted: “The airport has been upgraded to accommodate larger aeroplanes and significantly higher passenger volumes, creating the capacity needed to support future growth.”
Strategic Gateway for AMAALA
Al Wajh Airport serves as a primary gateway to AMAALA, a luxury wellness resort located 45 minutes away. The airport’s expansion aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 tourism goals, aiming to attract high-net-worth travelers to the Red Sea region. The project also supports broader economic diversification by improving access for international visitors and business travelers.
For travel professionals, the upgraded airport opens new opportunities for tour operators, hoteliers, and airlines to develop packages and routes to the northwest Saudi coast. The increased capacity and international flight capability are expected to drive demand for luxury accommodations and experiences at AMAALA and nearby destinations.
RSG’s investment in Al Wajh Airport reflects a trend of infrastructure development tied to luxury tourism projects.
