Norwegian Cruise Line's Regatta departed Rome on 1 September, marking the start of a record-breaking 370-day world voyage that will call at 220 ports across 62 countries and six continents. The cruise, operated under the Explorations by Norwegian brand, is being sold primarily through Australian agency My Cruises, which has tapped into strong demand for long-duration travel among Down Under passengers.

Flexible segments drive demand

Rather than requiring guests to commit to the full circumnavigation, My Cruises has structured the itinerary to allow travelers to book shorter segments, ranging from a few weeks to several months. This flexibility has proven popular, with more than 10,000 Australian and New Zealand guests already booked across the various legs. Michael Middleton, Global Head of Cruise at My Cruises, said, “Seeing Regatta set sail on this incredible journey is a hugely exciting moment for everyone involved.”

The voyage begins in the Mediterranean, then heads to Northern Europe, where passengers will chase the Northern Lights, before crossing the Atlantic to the Americas, the South Pacific, Asia, and Africa. The ship will visit iconic destinations such as Barcelona, Lisbon, Reykjavik, New York, San Francisco, Sydney, and Cape Town, offering a diverse mix of cultural and natural highlights.

Among the full-voyage passengers are Sunshine Coast retirees Mark and Ingrid Dudley, who are embarking on the entire 370-day journey. “We've dreamed of seeing the world by sea, and this itinerary covers everything we've ever wanted to experience,” said Mark Dudley. The couple represents a growing segment of affluent, time-rich travelers seeking immersive, long-haul cruise experiences.

The launch of Explorations by Norwegian comes as the cruise industry sees renewed interest in extended voyages. According to industry analysts, world cruises have become a key growth area, with operators like Viking, Oceania, and Regent Seven Seas also expanding their long-duration offerings. Norwegian's entry into this space with a dedicated brand signals its ambition to capture a share of this lucrative market.

For travel agents, the flexible segment model presents new sales opportunities. Rather than selling a single, expensive product, agents can tailor shorter cruises to clients' budgets and schedules, potentially attracting first-time world cruisers. My Cruises has provided extensive training and marketing support to its agent network, emphasizing the unique selling points of the voyage.

The Regatta, a 30,277-ton vessel originally built for Oceania Cruises, has been refurbished to meet Norwegian's standards. The ship carries around 684 guests, ensuring an intimate atmosphere. Onboard amenities include multiple dining venues, a spa, and enrichment programs featuring guest lecturers and destination experts.

As the ship settles into its rhythm, passengers will enjoy a year of exploration, with sea days interspersed with port calls. The itinerary has been carefully planned to minimize sea days and maximize time ashore, with overnight stays in several major cities. This approach aligns with the growing preference for destination-intensive cruising.

The success of this voyage could influence future deployment decisions by Norwegian and other lines. If demand remains strong, we may see more world cruises offered with flexible segments, catering to a broader demographic. For now, the Regatta's journey represents a bold statement about the enduring appeal of slow, immersive travel.

Travel professionals monitoring the cruise sector should note the potential ripple effects on port infrastructure and shore excursion providers, as the ship's schedule will impact dozens of destinations over the coming year. The voyage also underscores the importance of strategic partnerships between cruise lines and specialized agencies like My Cruises, which can effectively market complex, long-duration products.

As the Regatta continues its historic circumnavigation, the industry will be watching closely for booking trends and passenger feedback. The outcome could shape the future of world cruising, offering lessons in flexibility, customization, and the enduring allure of seeing the world by sea.
