Scenic Group is celebrating four decades of operation this October with a sweeping expansion of its river and yacht cruise portfolio. The company, founded in Australia in 1986, will introduce new luxury vessels across Europe, India, and Southeast Asia, while also growing its Emerald Yacht Cruises fleet and debuting the Scenic Ikon.

Founder and Chairman Glen Moroney said the company's vision has remained consistent: "to continually elevate how our guests experience the world." Scenic Group designs, builds, and operates its own fleet, a model that gives it direct control over the guest experience and allows for rapid innovation.

River fleet growth across three continents

The river expansion includes the Emerald Lumi, set to enhance cruises on France's Seine River in 2027. That same year, Scenic will introduce new journeys on India's Hooghly River, followed by the Brahmaputra River in 2028. In Southeast Asia, the Scenic Spirit II and Scenic Spirit III will launch on the Mekong River in 2028, adding capacity on one of the region's most popular cruise routes.

These additions reflect a broader trend of river cruise operators expanding into Asia and other emerging markets, as demand for immersive, small-ship experiences continues to grow. For travel agents, the new itineraries offer fresh selling points for clients seeking off-the-beaten-path destinations.

Yacht fleet and Scenic Ikon debut

On the yacht side, Emerald Raiya will join the fleet in 2027, followed by Emerald Xara in 2028. Both vessels will broaden Emerald Yacht Cruises' destination coverage, including new sailings in the Seychelles. The Scenic Ikon, a new luxury yacht, will debut in the Mediterranean in April 2028, with its inaugural season also featuring Antarctica.

The expansion positions Scenic Group to compete more aggressively in the luxury expedition and yacht segments, where rivals like Ponant and Silversea have also been adding capacity. For cruise lines, the ability to offer unique itineraries in less-traveled regions is becoming a key differentiator.

40th anniversary celebrations

Throughout October, guests on Scenic and Emerald Cruises are enjoying special events and themed entertainment as part of the anniversary. Tom Goetter, Vice President of Oceans Hotel Operations, said the celebrations are an opportunity to share the Scenic Group story and recognize the dedication of the team behind each journey.

"We're proud of what we've built over 40 years, and we're excited about the future," Goetter added. The company's growth strategy includes not only new ships but also enhanced onboard experiences and expanded destination offerings.

For travel professionals, the expansion signals increased inventory in key markets. Agents looking to sell river cruises in Europe or Asia now have more options, while the yacht additions cater to luxury clients seeking exclusive experiences. The Scenic Ikon's dual Mediterranean and Antarctica itineraries could appeal to adventure-minded travelers.

Scenic Group's anniversary comes at a time when the cruise industry is seeing strong demand, particularly for river and expedition cruises. The company's investment in new tonnage reflects confidence in the sector's long-term prospects.

As the group looks ahead, it remains committed to its founding principle of delivering exceptional travel experiences. With the new ships and routes, Scenic Group is poised to continue its growth trajectory well into its fifth decade.
