Southwest Airlines has unveiled a comprehensive overhaul of its Rapid Rewards loyalty programme, set to take effect on 1 January 2027. The changes introduce a new three-tier structure, expanded redemption options, and international airline partnerships, signalling a strategic push to deepen customer engagement and compete more aggressively in the loyalty space.
New tier structure and enhanced earning
The revamped programme will feature Silver, Gold, and Platinum tiers, with Platinum status offering unlimited Companion Pass trips—a significant upgrade for frequent flyers. Members will also benefit from Milestone Rewards, which allow them to earn rewards before reaching a new tier, providing more immediate value.
Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers will find it easier to achieve tier status, earning one Tier Qualifying Point (TQP) for every dollar spent. This change is designed to reward card spend more directly, aligning with industry trends that link credit card usage to loyalty benefits.
Nandika Suri, Vice President of Rapid Rewards, said, “As our Members engage more with Southwest, they’ve told us they want Rapid Rewards to reward them in more meaningful ways.” The enhancements are a direct response to that feedback, offering more opportunities for members to earn and redeem points.
International expansion and partnerships
Beyond domestic improvements, Southwest is broadening its international footprint. From Spring 2027, members can earn and redeem points with new airline partners, including Icelandair, China Airlines, and Etihad Airways. This opens up destinations such as Reykjavik, Paris, and Tokyo, giving members more flexibility and choice.
The move aligns with Southwest's recent efforts to expand its network and enhance its digital tools, such as the ChatGPT plugin for flight bookings and the 'Enter Aeroplane Mode' feature that converts notifications into points. These initiatives reflect a broader strategy to integrate loyalty with technology and customer experience.
Expanded redemption and premium amenities
Members will soon be able to use points for seat selection and rental cars, broadening the redemption catalogue beyond flights. The airline also plans to introduce Southwest Icon Lounges in late 2027, with the first location at Nashville International Airport. These lounges will offer premium amenities, catering to travellers seeking a more comfortable airport experience.
The introduction of lounges marks a significant shift for Southwest, which has historically been a point-to-point carrier without a traditional lounge network. This move could enhance its appeal to business travellers and compete with legacy carriers' offerings.
Industry analysts see this as a strategic response to evolving customer expectations and competitive pressures. As Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines refresh their international suites dining, and other carriers enhance their loyalty programmes, Southwest is positioning itself to retain and attract high-value customers.
The revamped Rapid Rewards programme underscores Southwest's commitment to customer loyalty and satisfaction, promising a more rewarding travel experience for its members. With the new tiers, partners, and amenities, the airline is clearly aiming to stay competitive in a rapidly changing market.
