Thai AirAsia is gearing up for a busy fourth quarter, announcing a significant expansion of its domestic network to capture year-end travel demand. Starting 1 October, the carrier will operate direct services from Don Mueang International Airport to 22 Thai destinations, while also launching flights from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Phuket, Krabi, and Chiang Mai.

The move comes as Thailand's tourism sector enters its peak season, supported by government initiatives and a rebound in domestic travel. CEO Phairat Pornpathananangoon expressed confidence in the market, stating, "We are expanding our route network and flight frequencies to accommodate this anticipated surge in demand."

Capacity boost and frequency increases

Thai AirAsia plans to operate up to 135 flights daily during the period, a 50% jump from the previous quarter's peak of 88 flights. At Don Mueang, the airline will increase daily frequencies to 17 for Chiang Mai, 15 for Phuket, and nine for Hat Yai. Additional capacity will be allocated to Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, Krabi, Chiang Rai, and Ubon Ratchathani.

Suvarnabhumi Airport will see six daily flights to Chiang Mai, five to Phuket, and two to Krabi. The airline is also introducing new cross-regional routes, linking Phuket directly to the Northeast with services to Khon Kaen and Udon Thani starting 25 October.

This expansion aligns with broader trends in the region, as carriers and destinations prepare for a strong high season. For travel professionals, the increased frequencies offer more flexibility for clients booking domestic itineraries, particularly those combining beach and cultural destinations.

The airline's strategy reflects a broader push to capture leisure and business travel, with connections that facilitate multi-city trips. For example, the new Phuket–Khon Kaen route opens up the Northeast's emerging tourism hubs, which have seen growing interest from both domestic and international visitors.

Thai AirAsia's move also complements other developments in the region, such as Indochina's unified campaign for high-value travel, which aims to attract premium visitors to the area. Additionally, the airline's focus on domestic connectivity comes as Riyadh Air prepares to launch Bangkok flights, adding to the competitive landscape.

For agents and tour operators, the expanded schedule provides more options for building packages around Thailand's popular destinations. The increased frequencies to Chiang Mai and Phuket, in particular, will support demand for leisure travel, while the new cross-regional routes could encourage longer stays and multi-destination itineraries.

Thai AirAsia's commitment to domestic growth is a positive signal for the country's tourism recovery, and the airline is positioning itself to be a key player in the high season. With the Tourism Authority of Thailand's promotional efforts, the outlook for domestic travel remains strong.

As the industry watches the rollout, the airline's performance will be a bellwether for the broader market. The expansion also underscores the importance of air connectivity in driving tourism, a theme echoed by other carriers and destinations across the region.
