United Airlines has officially opened its new Terminal B North Concourse at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston, marking a significant milestone in the carrier's ongoing investment in its Texas hub. The three-level, 765,000-square-foot facility, which opens to the public on 22 October, is designed to enhance the passenger experience with more space, modern amenities, and a strong emphasis on local culture.

A major capacity boost for Houston

The new concourse features 22 mainline gates, allowing United to operate larger aircraft and offer more seats on routes to destinations across the globe. This expansion is part of United's $2.6 billion Terminal B Transformation Programme, which replaces the original 1969 facilities and increases peak travel capacity by 40% compared to 2023. United, the largest carrier at IAH with over 14,000 employees and 500 daily departures, has invested more than $3.5 billion in the airport since 2015.

According to United CEO Scott Kirby, the goal is to make the airport experience as enjoyable as the trip itself. "I want our customers to start their holiday the minute they show up at the airport," Kirby said, underscoring the airline's focus on customer experience. The terminal's design features high ceilings and expansive spaces, with 10 art installations inspired by Houston's bayous, cultural diversity, and spirit of innovation.

Dining and amenities

Travelers will find a curated selection of local dining options, including B&B Butchers & Restaurant and Blood Bros. BBQ, bringing a taste of Houston to the concourse. The facility also includes family-friendly amenities and advanced baggage technology to streamline the journey. The centerpiece is the 54,000-square-foot United Club, the largest of its kind in the Americas, with seating for 800 guests, an outdoor terrace, and panoramic views of the airfield.

The new concourse strengthens United's network from IAH, which now serves 65 international destinations, with new routes to Latin America and the Caribbean. This reinforces Houston's role as a key global hub for the airline. For travel professionals, the expanded capacity and enhanced facilities at IAH are likely to benefit corporate and leisure travelers alike, offering more options and a smoother experience.

United's investment in Houston is part of a broader strategy to upgrade its hubs and improve operational efficiency. The airline has also been expanding its meal preorder service to more flights, reflecting a wider trend in the industry toward personalization and convenience. As United continues to modernize its infrastructure, the new Terminal B North Concourse stands as a testament to the carrier's commitment to its Houston hub and its passengers.
