Vancouver Airport Authority, the operator of Vancouver International Airport (YVR), has received an Aa2 issuer rating with a stable outlook from Moody's Ratings. This is the first time the entity has been rated by Moody's, and the assessment underscores YVR's strategic importance as Canada's leading gateway to the Asia-Pacific region and the country's second-busiest airport.

Moody's analysts highlighted YVR's structurally robust passenger demand, which underpins long-term traffic resilience, and its growing cargo operations, which hit record levels in 2025. The agency also noted the Airport Authority's low leverage and strong credit metrics, reinforcing its position as a key cargo hub. The stable outlook reflects expectations that the authority will maintain its prudent financial policies and strong operating performance.

Financial Discipline and Strategic Planning

Clayton Buckingham, Vice President Finance and CFO of Vancouver Airport Authority, commented: "Receiving an Aa2 public rating from Moody's further validates the Airport Authority's strong financial foundation, resilient operating performance, and our prudent long-term strategy." He added that this rating, alongside existing ratings from S&P Global Ratings and Morningstar DBRS, strengthens confidence in the authority's credit profile and supports its long-term financing strategy.

The Moody's rating follows recent positive actions from S&P Global Ratings and Morningstar DBRS, both of which cited strong financial performance and disciplined capital investment planning. In 2025, YVR handled a record 26.9 million passengers and nearly 365,000 tonnes of cargo, a 7.4% increase year-over-year. The airport also earned the Skytrax Best Airport in North America award for the 15th consecutive year, a testament to its consistent service quality.

For travel industry professionals, YVR's financial strength signals stability for airlines operating at the airport, including Air Canada, WestJet, and Cathay Pacific, as well as for cargo carriers like Cargojet and FedEx. The airport's role as a transpacific hub is critical for connecting routes such as Vancouver–Tokyo Narita, Vancouver–Hong Kong, and Vancouver–Sydney, and its growing cargo capacity supports e-commerce and logistics demand.

While YVR's credit rating is a positive indicator, airports globally face challenges such as rising interest rates and infrastructure costs. However, YVR's prudent capital planning and strong traffic base position it well. For context, other major airports like London Heathrow and Singapore Changi hold similar ratings, reflecting their strategic importance and financial discipline.

This development also aligns with broader trends in airport financing, where credit ratings influence borrowing costs and investment capacity. As YVR continues to expand its cargo and passenger services, its financial health will be a key factor for partners and stakeholders across the travel ecosystem.
