Virgin Australia has been appointed as the Domestic Airline Partner for the Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA), a move that deepens the carrier's engagement with the country's travel trade. The partnership will support ATIA's advocacy efforts and member events nationwide, with a particular focus on the industry's premier weekend: Beyond Borders and the National Travel Industry Awards (NTIA).

During Beyond Borders, scheduled for 9 October at the Melbourne Convention Centre, Virgin Australia will operate the Virgin Australia Lounge, providing delegates with a dedicated space for networking and business discussions. The airline will also serve as the Master of Ceremonies Sponsor for the NTIA Gala Dinner, set for 10 October 2026 at the Palladium, Crown Melbourne, an event that recognises excellence across the Australian travel sector.

Strengthening industry ties

Darren McDermott, Virgin Australia's General Manager of Sales, expressed pride in the expanded collaboration. “Virgin Australia is proud to strengthen our partnership with the Australian Travel Industry Association as its Domestic Airline Partner and to once again support the National Travel Industry Awards as MC Sponsor,” he said.

ATIA CEO Dean Long highlighted the value of the airline's involvement, noting that “Virgin Australia’s support helps strengthen those industry connections through ATIA’s major events and member platforms.” The partnership underscores Virgin Australia's commitment to the travel industry, enhancing experiences for both members and customers.

The announcement comes as ATIA continues to mobilise support for Australian agents, including recent efforts in response to flooding in Nepal and China. The association's role as a central hub for agent resources and advocacy remains critical, and partnerships like this one help fund and expand those initiatives.

Beyond Borders and the NTIA are key dates on the Australian travel calendar, drawing airline executives, hoteliers, cruise line representatives, tour operators, and agents. The events provide a platform for discussing industry trends, celebrating achievements, and forging new business relationships.

Virgin Australia's involvement extends beyond sponsorship. The airline's presence at these events offers delegates direct access to its sales team and insights into its domestic network strategy. For travel agents, this represents an opportunity to strengthen relationships with a major domestic carrier.

The partnership also aligns with broader industry movements, such as the recent expansion of international carriers into the Australian market and the growing emphasis on experience-led travel, as seen in other Asia-Pacific collaborations. Virgin Australia's commitment to the trade is part of a wider trend of airlines investing in agent partnerships to drive bookings and loyalty.

As the travel industry continues to recover and evolve, collaborations like this one are essential. They provide the funding and support needed for associations like ATIA to deliver value to their members, from advocacy to professional development.

With the 2026 NTIA Gala Dinner still on the horizon, the partnership sets a positive tone for the coming years, reinforcing the importance of collaboration between airlines and the travel trade community.
