The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has confirmed that Xiamen Airlines will host the 83rd IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit (WATS) in Xiamen, China, from 30 May to 1 June 2027. This will be the third time China has hosted the industry's flagship event, following the 58th AGM in Shanghai in 2002 and the 68th AGM in Beijing in 2012.

Willie Walsh, IATA's Director General, highlighted the significance of holding the AGM in China, noting the country's central role in global aviation. "China's airlines are among the top airlines by passenger traffic in the world," Walsh said, pointing to the nation's leadership in technology and digitalisation to enhance operational efficiency. The decision to award the 2027 AGM to Xiamen was made during the 82nd IATA AGM in Rio de Janeiro, underscoring China's growing influence in the sector.

Xiamen's Strategic Rise as an Aviation Hub

Zhao Dong, Chairman of Xiamen Airlines, expressed pride in hosting the event, emphasizing Xiamen's historical significance as a port and commercial hub. "China is a vast and culturally diverse country, with many dynamic cities and regions beyond its best-known gateways," he remarked. The carrier, a member of the SkyTeam alliance, operates a network spanning over 100 domestic and international routes, including services to Amsterdam, Los Angeles, and Sydney.

The upcoming opening of Xiang'an International Airport later this year is expected to further solidify Xiamen's position as a transportation and business centre. The new airport, designed to handle up to 45 million passengers annually, will replace the existing Gaoqi International Airport and provide expanded capacity for both passenger and cargo traffic. This development aligns with broader trends in the region, where airports are increasingly becoming catalysts for economic growth.

Xie Bing, CEO and President of Xiamen Airlines, highlighted the city's unique appeal for delegates. "AGM guests can look forward to discovering the rich culture, warm hospitality, coastal beauty, and a relaxed lifestyle that create the distinctive spirit and vitality of Xiamen," he said. The city, located on the southeast coast of China, is known for its colonial architecture, Gulangyu Island, and thriving tea culture.

The AGM will bring together top executives from airlines, airports, and travel technology providers, as well as policymakers and industry analysts. Discussions are expected to cover sustainability, digital transformation, and the recovery of international air travel. The event also serves as a key networking opportunity for MICE professionals and travel agents looking to expand their portfolios in the Asia-Pacific region.

China's aviation market has rebounded strongly post-pandemic, with domestic traffic surpassing pre-COVID levels and international routes gradually recovering. Carriers such as Air China, China Southern, and China Eastern have been expanding their long-haul networks, while Xiamen Airlines has positioned itself as a key player in cross-strait and Southeast Asian markets. The choice of Xiamen as host city reflects IATA's strategy to rotate the AGM among diverse destinations, showcasing emerging hubs alongside established ones.

For travel industry professionals, the 2027 AGM offers a chance to engage with Chinese aviation leaders and explore opportunities in one of the world's fastest-growing travel markets. As the industry navigates challenges such as fuel costs and geopolitical tensions, events like this provide a platform for collaboration and innovation. The AGM also highlights the importance of secondary cities in China's aviation landscape, a trend that hoteliers and tour operators should watch closely.
