Digital travel platform Agoda has released its 2026 Repeat Visitor Ranking, shedding light on the Asian destinations that most successfully convert first-time visitors into loyal returnees. Based on booking data from the first half of 2026, Tokyo has clinched the top spot, with Bangkok maintaining a firm position in the top three. Bali, Seoul, and Osaka complete the top five, underscoring the enduring appeal of these urban and island hubs.

Thailand's Repeat Magnet Cities

In Thailand, the ranking highlights a consistent pattern of repeat visitation across five key cities: Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, and Hat Yai. Each destination caters to distinct traveler segments, from Bangkok's wellness-focused trips to Phuket's long-stay appeal. Pattaya continues to attract families seeking short escapes, while Chiang Mai has become a haven for digital nomads, and Hat Yai draws weekenders from nearby regions.

This diversity is a strategic advantage for Thailand's tourism industry, as it allows the country to capture a wide spectrum of repeat travelers. The data suggests that travelers are increasingly seeking deeper connections with destinations rather than simply ticking off landmarks.

Japan and Vietnam Rise in Repeat Appeal

Japan's secondary cities are gaining traction, with Fukuoka making its debut in the top 10. Known for its vibrant street food scene and rich cultural offerings, Fukuoka exemplifies the growing interest in exploring beyond Tokyo and Osaka. Meanwhile, Vietnam's Da Nang has climbed to sixth place, attracting repeat visitors with its beaches and proximity to UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Hoi An and My Son.

The rise of these destinations aligns with broader trends in Asian travel, where travelers are seeking authentic experiences and value-for-money options. For hoteliers and tour operators, this signals an opportunity to develop tailored packages that encourage longer stays and repeat bookings.

“Travel is becoming less about ticking destinations off a list and more about finding places worth returning to,” said Akaporn Rodkong, Country Director for Thailand and Indochina at Agoda.

Rodkong's observation reflects a shift in traveler behavior that has significant implications for destination marketing and product development. For airlines, this could mean increased demand for routes to secondary cities like Fukuoka, while cruise lines might consider adding more calls at emerging ports in Vietnam and Japan.

The ranking also offers actionable insights for travel agents and MICE planners. Understanding which destinations foster repeat visits can help in designing loyalty programs, corporate retreats, and incentive travel packages that resonate with seasoned travelers.

Agoda's data aligns with other recent trends, such as the record demand for Japan's 2026 Silver Week break, indicating sustained interest in Japanese destinations. Similarly, the corporate travel boom in Vietnam is likely contributing to Da Nang's repeat visitor numbers, as business travelers often return for leisure.

For the hospitality sector, these findings underscore the importance of building guest loyalty through personalized experiences. Hotels in repeat-favorite cities like Bangkok and Tokyo can leverage this data to refine their offerings, from wellness packages to family-friendly amenities.

As the travel industry continues to recover and evolve, understanding what drives repeat visitation is crucial for sustainable growth. Agoda's ranking provides a data-driven snapshot that can guide strategic decisions across aviation, hospitality, and destination management.
