On September 27, the global travel community observes World Tourism Day, this year themed around the digital agenda and artificial intelligence in reshaping tourism. For Bangkok, the occasion carries added significance: the following day, Skål International Bangkok celebrates 70 years since its founding in 1956.

The milestone arrives as the United Nations emphasizes that technology must serve people, communities, and sustainable development. Skål Bangkok's journey from a small circle of travel executives to one of Asia's established networking organizations mirrors the industry's evolution.

Seven decades of building bridges

Andrew J. Wood, a Bangkok member since 1992 and a former president of Skål International Bangkok, Thailand, and Asia, has chronicled the club's growth. He notes that when the club was founded, international travel was still limited, yet it brought together leaders from aviation, cruise, rail, hospitality, and tour operations to exchange ideas and forge relationships.

Wood's own career reflects that legacy. He has served twice as president of Skål Bangkok, as national president of Skål Thailand, and as a director of Skål International. His honors include the Order of Merit, the President's Award, and the distinction of Membre d'Honneur.

While the industry has transformed beyond recognition, the value of professional relationships has not diminished. Skål Bangkok continues to host regular events and engage with industry stakeholders, adapting its outreach for a more digital tourism world.

Looking forward under new leadership

Current president James Thurlby has focused on membership growth, strategic partnerships, and stronger industry engagement. As the club enters its eighth decade, the challenge is to make its history relevant to the next generation of tourism leaders.

Dr. Scott Michael Smith, director of Young Skål Bangkok and a two-decade Skål veteran, emphasized the importance of mentorship. "I have seen firsthand how Skål creates opportunities for promising young tourism professionals to learn from established industry leaders, build meaningful professional networks and grow into leadership roles," he said. "As Skål Bangkok celebrates 70 years, one of the best ways we can honour that legacy is by opening doors for the people who will lead tourism through its next chapter."

That next chapter will be shaped by artificial intelligence, digital platforms, sustainability, and shifting traveler expectations. Yet the anniversary serves as a reminder that tourism remains, at its core, a people business.

Bangkok's hospitality scene continues to thrive, with recent accolades such as Capella and Four Seasons ranking among the world's best hotels. The city also attracts new entrants like YOTEL's first Thailand property, underscoring its status as a regional hub.

As Skål Bangkok celebrates its 70th anniversary, it does so with an eye on the future, ensuring that its legacy of connection continues to benefit the industry for decades to come.
