Air Astana has further strengthened its presence in the Chinese market with the launch of a new direct service connecting Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport (NQZ) in Astana with Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN). The route, which begins operations on 2 May 2026, will operate twice weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays, complementing the existing five-times-weekly Almaty-Guangzhou service that has been in place since March 2025.

Flights from Astana depart at 18:45 local time, arriving in Guangzhou at 04:30 the following day. The 6-hour-45-minute journey will be operated using Airbus A321LR aircraft, configured with a two-class layout offering business and economy cabins. Guangzhou, a major industrial and transport hub in southern China, is now directly accessible from Kazakhstan's capital, opening new opportunities for business and leisure travellers.

Record China Network for Summer 2026

This expansion is part of a broader push by the Air Astana Group to deepen connectivity between Kazakhstan and China, a relationship that dates back to the airline's inaugural Almaty-Beijing flight in December 2002. During the 2026 summer season, the carrier plans to increase frequencies on several existing routes, including Almaty to Urumqi, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Sanya, and Yining, as well as Astana to Beijing and Urumqi. As a result, the total number of weekly flights between Kazakhstan and China will reach 51, a record for the airline.

The move underscores Air Astana's strategy to position itself as a key bridge between Central Asia, the Caucasus, Europe, and Asia. By expanding its Chinese network, the airline aims to capture growing demand from both business travellers and tourists, while also facilitating transit flows through its hubs in Almaty and Astana.

In related developments, Air Astana recently restored Dubai flights via a Pakistan airspace bypass, demonstrating its operational flexibility in response to regional airspace constraints. The airline's continued network growth reflects a broader trend among Central Asian carriers to expand into high-demand markets like China.

For travel professionals, the Astana-Guangzhou route offers new opportunities for corporate travel, cargo, and tourism. Guangzhou serves as a gateway to the Pearl River Delta, one of China's most economically dynamic regions, and is a major hub for manufacturing, trade, and exhibitions. The twice-weekly schedule provides flexibility for business travellers attending trade fairs or corporate meetings, while leisure passengers can connect to other destinations in southern China and Southeast Asia.

Air Astana's commitment to the Chinese market is also evident in its fleet strategy. The A321LR, with its extended range and fuel efficiency, is well-suited for medium-haul routes like Astana-Guangzhou, offering a comfortable cabin experience with lie-flat seats in business class. The airline has been progressively modernising its fleet, and the A321LR forms a key part of its long-haul operations.

The expansion comes as other travel companies are also launching new offerings for the 2026 season. For instance, Viking has launched its 2026 Alaska season with extended trans-Pacific and regional itineraries, while Explora Journeys has introduced off-peak Mediterranean itineraries. These developments highlight the industry's focus on expanding capacity and offering diverse travel options for the coming year.

Air Astana's record 51 weekly flights to China represent a significant milestone for the airline and for Kazakhstan-China aviation relations. Travel agents and tour operators can leverage this increased capacity to build packages that combine Kazakhstan's attractions—such as the futuristic capital Astana, the cultural hub Almaty, and the natural wonders of the Tien Shan mountains—with China's vast tourism offerings. The airline's network also enables seamless connections to Europe and the Middle East via its hubs, making it a competitive option for transit passengers.

As the summer 2026 schedule takes shape, Air Astana's expanded China network positions the carrier to capture a larger share of the growing Asia-Europe travel market. With 51 weekly flights, the airline is not only enhancing bilateral connectivity but also strengthening its role as a key player in the region's aviation landscape.
