Air India Cargo has marked a new chapter for western India's export logistics with the first international cargo flight from Navi Mumbai International Airport. The inaugural service, operated by Air India Express on 15 July, transported 1.79 tonnes of fresh guavas and Drumstick Moringa to Abu Dhabi, directly linking growers and traders in the region to a key Gulf market.
The flight, a Boeing 737-8, offers approximately 2.5 tonnes of cargo capacity per trip and will run thrice weekly on the Navi Mumbai–Abu Dhabi route. Air India Cargo expects to move around 25 tonnes of cargo monthly through this service, responding to rising demand for fresh Indian produce in the UAE and surrounding markets.
Cold-Chain Capabilities and Agricultural Impact
The shipment included guavas from Maharashtra's Konkan region and Drumstick Moringa, both highly sought after internationally. To preserve freshness, the cargo relied on a sophisticated cold-chain network with temperature-controlled facilities, ensuring the produce arrives in optimal condition. Ramesh Mamidala, Head of Cargo at Air India, stated: "This first export shipment from Navi Mumbai connects growers, traders and businesses in western India directly with one of the region's most important international markets."
Air India Cargo has invested in specialised equipment and GDP-certified handling processes to support perishables and other temperature-sensitive goods. Mamidala added: "Investments in cold-chain infrastructure and globally certified handling processes are helping us support exporters with the reliability they need."
The new route is expected to strengthen India's agricultural export ecosystem by providing faster, more efficient pathways to international consumers. For travel industry professionals, this development underscores the growing importance of dedicated cargo capacity in emerging airport hubs. Navi Mumbai International Airport, still in its early operational phase, is positioning itself as a critical node for both passenger and freight traffic in western India.
This launch follows the recent introduction of the airport's first international passenger route to Abu Dhabi with Air India Express, as reported in Navi Mumbai Airport Launches First International Route to Abu Dhabi with Air India Express. The cargo service complements that passenger link, offering exporters a seamless logistics chain.
Air India's broader cargo strategy includes enhancing digital capabilities and network expansion. The airline recently crossed 1 million WiFi users, with data consumption surging to 500 TB, as detailed in Air India Hits 1 Million WiFi Users, Data Consumption Surges to 500 TB. Such investments in connectivity and technology support the airline's cargo operations by enabling real-time tracking and customer engagement.
For tour operators and travel agents, this development signals increased connectivity from Navi Mumbai, which may spur new itineraries combining cargo and passenger services. The route also highlights the growing role of Indian airports in facilitating agricultural trade, a trend that could influence future route planning for airlines and logistics providers.
