Andrew Drummond is returning to the Maldives as General Manager of Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives, a property that will soon shed its InterContinental Hotels Group flag and relaunch as Kandooma Maldives. The move comes as the resort prepares for a significant operational shift: the management agreement with IHG concludes on 30 September 2026, after which HPL Hotels & Resorts — a subsidiary of Hotel Properties Limited (HPL) — will take over operations.

Drummond is no stranger to the property. He previously led the resort and is familiar with its distinct character and loyal guest base. His reappointment is intended to ensure continuity for staff, confidence for trade partners, and reassurance for repeat visitors during the transition. “It is incredibly special to return to Kandooma at such an important moment,” Drummond said. “Leading the resort into its next chapter is both a privilege and an opportunity I deeply value.”

Kandooma Next Chapter: A Phased Enhancement Programme

Central to the resort’s evolution is the Kandooma Next Chapter, a multi-stage enhancement programme designed to refresh accommodation, upgrade guest facilities, and introduce new experiences. Drummond emphasised that the programme is guest-focused, with each phase carefully planned to minimise disruption and preserve the resort’s relaxed atmosphere. The property will remain fully operational throughout the works, continuing to welcome guests without interruption.

The enhancement programme aligns with broader trends in the Maldives hospitality sector, where properties are increasingly investing in experiential upgrades. Recent developments such as Rah Gili Maldives and SAii Lagoon Maldives reflect a shift toward flexible luxury and lifestyle-driven offerings. Kandooma’s approach appears to balance refreshment with operational continuity — a strategy that may appeal to tour operators and travel advisors seeking reliable inventory during the transition.

Further details on the Kandooma Maldives brand identity and new guest experiences are expected before the official relaunch on 1 October 2026. The resort’s management has indicated that announcements will be made in the coming months, giving the trade time to adjust booking strategies.

Drummond’s return also underscores the importance of experienced leadership in navigating brand transitions. As the Maldives tourism sector continues to evolve — with AI-driven personalization and marine conservation gaining traction — properties that maintain rate integrity and service consistency are well-positioned to retain market share. For travel professionals, the key takeaway is that Kandooma Maldives will remain open and operational throughout the enhancement programme, with a clear timeline for its new identity.

HPL Hotels & Resorts, which operates several properties across Asia, is betting on Drummond’s deep knowledge of the resort and its community to steer the property through this pivotal period. The company has not disclosed the total investment in the Kandooma Next Chapter programme, but the phased approach suggests a measured commitment to upgrading without alienating the existing guest base.
