Tourism Solomons has ended a five-year leadership vacuum with the appointment of Andrew Nihopara as Chief Executive Officer. The announcement, made by Board Chairman Tony Langston, marks a pivotal moment for the destination marketing organisation as it seeks to raise the Solomon Islands' profile among international travellers and trade partners.
Nihopara brings more than two decades of experience spanning the tourism and public sectors across the Solomon Islands and the wider Pacific. His career includes a previous stint as Head of Marketing for Tourism Solomons from 2001 to 2004, followed by roles as Marketing Manager and Deputy CEO at the Pacific Tourism Organisation in Fiji from 2006 to 2011. During that period, he was recognised as the Pacific-Asia Travel Association’s ‘Face of the Future’, an accolade that underscored his early promise in destination marketing.
His public-sector background includes serving as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in the Solomon Islands, where he contributed to policy frameworks aimed at fostering sustainable tourism growth. This blend of commercial and governmental experience positions him well to navigate the complexities of promoting a developing destination in a competitive Asia-Pacific market.
Strategic leadership for a new era
Langston highlighted Nihopara's strategic vision and established networks across the region as key assets. "Andrew's leadership will be instrumental as we work to strengthen the Solomon Islands' position in the global tourism arena," Langston said. "The board is confident in his ability to drive our strategic objectives and looks forward to collaborating with him."
The CEO post had remained vacant for over five years, a period during which Tourism Solomons operated under interim arrangements. The recruitment process, managed by KPMG Fiji, was described as rigorous, underscoring the importance the board placed on finding the right candidate to lead the organisation into its next phase.
Nihopara's academic credentials include a Master of Commerce in Management and Public Administration and a Postgraduate Diploma from the University of the South Pacific, as well as a Bachelor of Business Studies from Massey University in New Zealand. This educational foundation complements his practical experience in both marketing and policy development.
The appointment comes at a time when Pacific island destinations are vying for a larger share of long-haul travel, particularly from markets such as Australia, New Zealand, and increasingly North America. The Solomon Islands, with its rich cultural heritage and pristine natural environments, has significant untapped potential. Nihopara's task will be to translate that potential into tangible growth in visitor numbers and tourism revenue.
Industry observers will be watching to see how Nihopara leverages his regional connections, including his tenure at the Pacific Tourism Organisation, to foster partnerships with airlines, tour operators, and travel agents. The Solomon Islands' connectivity remains a challenge, with limited direct air links, but recent developments in Pacific aviation could offer new opportunities.
Tourism Solomons is also expected to enhance its digital marketing efforts and trade engagement, areas where Nihopara's previous experience in sales and marketing will be directly relevant. His leadership will be crucial in aligning the organisation's activities with the national tourism strategy and ensuring that the destination remains competitive against neighbours like Vanuatu and Fiji.
As the Solomon Islands prepares to host major events and attract investment in tourism infrastructure, Nihopara's appointment signals a renewed focus on professional leadership. The board's confidence in him, as expressed by Langston, suggests a period of stability and ambition ahead for the organisation.
