British Airways is expanding its South Asia network with a new seasonal route linking London Gatwick and Colombo, Sri Lanka. The thrice-weekly service, set to begin on 23 October, will run throughout the 2026/27 winter season, giving UK travellers a direct gateway to the island nation during its peak tourist period.
The move responds to sustained growth in UK outbound travel to Sri Lanka. According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, more than 170,000 Britons visited the country in 2026, making the UK the second-largest source market after India. The new Gatwick-Colombo flights are expected to reinforce that momentum, offering a convenient alternative to existing one-stop connections via hubs such as Dubai, Doha, and Singapore.
Sarangi Thilakasena, Deputy Director of Marketing at the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, welcomed the announcement. “We are delighted to welcome British Airways’ new seasonal service between London Gatwick and Colombo. The UK is an important market for Sri Lanka, and this new route makes it even easier for British travellers to discover the island during the winter season,” she said.
Route details and cabin offerings
The flights will be operated with a three-class configuration, featuring World Traveller (economy), World Traveller Plus (premium economy), and Club World (business) cabins. Return fares are set to start from £620, inclusive of taxes and carrier charges, positioning the route competitively against other carriers serving Colombo from Europe.
Gatwick serves as a key base for British Airways’ leisure-oriented long-haul operations, complementing its extensive network from Heathrow. The Colombo service adds to the airline’s existing South Asian portfolio, which includes routes to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad, though this marks a return to Sri Lanka after a hiatus.
The timing of the launch aligns with the upcoming World Travel Market London, where Sri Lanka Tourism will engage with UK travel trade and media to promote the destination’s offerings. The bureau is expected to highlight the island’s UNESCO-listed heritage sites, wildlife safaris, culinary scene, and wellness retreats as key draws for winter travellers.
Strategic implications for the travel trade
For UK-based tour operators and travel agents, the new direct link simplifies itinerary planning and reduces journey times to Colombo, which previously required a connection. The route also opens opportunities for combined packages with Sri Lanka’s neighbouring destinations, such as the Maldives, a popular pairing for long-haul leisure travellers.
The announcement comes amid broader shifts in the travel industry, including changing traffic patterns in the Gulf region that have prompted some carriers to adjust their networks. British Airways’ decision to add a direct UK-Sri Lanka service reflects confidence in the resilience of leisure demand for South Asia.
Industry observers note that the seasonal nature of the route allows the airline to test demand without committing to year-round capacity. If load factors remain strong, a permanent extension could be considered in future seasons, similar to how other carriers have expanded their South Asian networks.
For Sri Lanka, the new service is a boost to its tourism recovery strategy, which has focused on diversifying source markets and increasing air connectivity. The UK’s status as a key market is reinforced by this development, and the winter timing is expected to attract both sun-seekers and cultural travellers.
Travel professionals can expect to see promotional campaigns tied to the route launch, with Sri Lanka Tourism likely to partner with British Airways on joint marketing initiatives. The airline’s loyalty programme, Executive Club, will also offer members the chance to earn Avios on the new service, adding further appeal for frequent flyers.
As the winter season approaches, the Gatwick-Colombo route is poised to become a significant contributor to UK-Sri Lanka travel flows. With competitive pricing and a strong leisure proposition, it represents a strategic addition to British Airways’ network and a welcome option for the trade.
