Carnival Cruise Line has officially unveiled Carnival Rewards, a comprehensive overhaul of its guest loyalty offering, set to launch on 1 September 2026. The new program is designed to recognize a broader spectrum of guest interactions with the cruise line, moving beyond the traditional metric of sailings completed.
At the heart of Carnival Rewards are two distinct earning mechanisms: Carnival Rewards Points and Status Qualifying Stars. Guests will accumulate points for every dollar spent on eligible purchases, which now include gratuities, and can redeem these points for future cruises, shore excursions, spa treatments, and other onboard experiences. Points are typically credited to a guest's account approximately 14 days after the conclusion of a sailing, enabling relatively swift redemption.
The Status Qualifying Stars component determines a guest's tier—Red, Gold, Platinum, or Diamond—based on their activity within a two-year qualifying window. The inaugural qualifying period runs from 1 September 2026 through 31 December 2028, giving guests ample time to accrue stars and secure their status for the following cycle.
Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, emphasized the program's guest-centric philosophy: "The new programme recognises the many ways our guests engage with Carnival and with both rewards and status, we're giving guests more flexibility and more value."
In addition to the core program, Carnival has partnered with Mastercard to offer the Carnival Rewards Mastercard, which allows cardholders to accelerate their status progression and earn bonus points through everyday spending. Cardholders can earn up to 6X points on Carnival purchases and receive a 50,000-point welcome bonus for new accounts.
This launch marks a significant evolution in Carnival's loyalty strategy, which now aims to deepen customer relationships by rewarding engagement across multiple touchpoints. As the cruise line continues to expand its fleet and destination portfolio, the new program is expected to play a pivotal role in maintaining its competitive edge in the global cruise market.
Industry context and competitive landscape
Carnival's move reflects a broader trend among major cruise operators to modernize loyalty offerings. Rivals such as Royal Caribbean International and Norwegian Cruise Line have also revamped their programs in recent years, introducing tiered benefits and partnerships that extend beyond the ship. Carnival's inclusion of gratuities as eligible spend is a notable differentiator, as is the two-year qualifying window, which may appeal to guests who sail less frequently but engage with the brand through other channels.
The program's flexibility is likely to resonate with travel advisors, who often play a key role in helping clients navigate loyalty benefits. Agents can now advise clients on how to maximize points through onboard spending and co-branded credit card usage, potentially increasing client satisfaction and repeat bookings.
Carnival's announcement comes amid a period of robust growth for the cruise industry, with record passenger numbers and new ship deliveries scheduled through the decade. The company's investment in loyalty is seen as a strategic move to capture a larger share of the repeat cruiser market, which is highly lucrative for cruise lines.
For travel professionals, the launch of Carnival Rewards underscores the importance of staying abreast of loyalty program changes. As cruise lines compete for guest loyalty, advisors who can articulate the value of these programs will be better positioned to secure bookings and build long-term client relationships.
Related developments in the travel loyalty space include Agoda and China Airlines' new hotel rewards platform, which highlights the growing convergence of travel and loyalty ecosystems. Similarly, Maharashtra's new convention bureau aims to boost MICE travel, another area where loyalty programs can drive engagement.
Carnival's new program is set to be a central topic at upcoming industry conferences, where executives and agents will discuss its implications for guest retention and revenue growth. As the launch date approaches, Carnival is expected to release further details on redemption options and partner integrations.
