For the first time, the world's two largest hotel brands by room count are both Chinese. According to HOTELS Magazine's year-end 2025 ranking, H World Group's Ji Hotel reached 404,600 rooms in operation, while its sister brand Hanting secured the second position. The achievement underscores the extraordinary scale Chinese hotel groups have built within their domestic market.

China's ecosystem fuels rapid expansion

The rise of Ji Hotel and Hanting is rooted in the depth of China's accommodation market. The country boasts one of the largest hotel inventories globally, supported by a mature franchise system, robust supply chains, and extensive digital infrastructure. At the end of 2025, H World operated 12,858 hotels with 1.264 million rooms, approximately 93% under managed or franchised models.

This asset-light approach keeps capital requirements low, allowing the group to scale by lending its brands, systems, and operational expertise to franchisees. China's digital ecosystem amplifies this model: OTAs like Ctrip and Meituan provide demand access, mobile payments reduce transaction costs, and centralized procurement sharpens supply-chain efficiency. Once a concept proves viable, it can be replicated rapidly across the existing network—a key reason Chinese hotel groups have achieved global scale.

Yet the harder question is whether this domestic playbook can be transplanted to other markets. Chinese hotel groups have demonstrated they can turn complex operational challenges into standardized solutions. True globalization, however, is not about exporting the domestic answer unchanged. It is about building a system that can find new answers in different markets.

Consider the metrics that will define future competitiveness. How many overseas projects are invested in or owned by local owners without Chinese capital backgrounds? How many room nights come from local consumers? How many hotels can remain competitive without relying on Chinese travelers? And how many owners can achieve sustained and verifiable returns on investment?

For hotel asset owners, the final choice is not a brand story but a proven track record of operating results. As Chinese groups push beyond their borders, they will need to demonstrate that their operational excellence translates across cultures and markets. The industry will be watching closely.
