The California Hotel & Lodging Association Hospitality Foundation (CHLAHF) has committed more than $160,000 to support 97 students pursuing degrees in hotel management, tourism, and culinary arts at 18 colleges and universities across the state. This investment underscores the foundation's focus on cultivating the next generation of hospitality professionals amid ongoing industry labor challenges.
Scholarship Distribution and Leading Institutions
San Diego State University emerged as the top recipient institution with 32 scholarship winners, followed by California State University Monterey Bay (21), California State University Long Beach (11), and the University of San Francisco (7). The breadth of participating schools reflects the foundation's reach across California's hospitality education ecosystem.
Michael Pace, Chair of CHLAHF and General Manager of The Archer Hotel in Napa, praised the recipients: "These scholarship recipients have already demonstrated the dedication, resilience, and leadership potential that will help define the future of our industry."
The awards will be formally presented at the Scholarship Awards Gala on 5 November at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa in Anaheim, an event that draws hospitality leaders from across the state.
Addressing the Talent Pipeline
This initiative arrives at a critical time for the hospitality sector, which continues to grapple with workforce shortages. Programs like CHLAHF's scholarships are part of a broader effort to attract and retain talent. As noted in our coverage of university tourism program expansions, educational institutions are scaling up to meet industry demand.
The foundation, a nonprofit organization, focuses on providing scholarships and research to support industry employees and hospitality students, aiming to promote excellence in California's hospitality sector. It encourages hospitality professionals and educators to join in supporting current and future scholarship recipients.
For travel industry stakeholders—from hoteliers to tour operators—such investments are essential for building a skilled workforce capable of delivering the service standards that define California's hospitality reputation. The foundation's work also aligns with broader trends in innovative labor solutions being adopted globally.
The 2026 cohort represents a diverse range of career paths, from front-of-house management to culinary arts, reflecting the multifaceted nature of modern hospitality. As the industry evolves, programs like CHLAHF's scholarships will play a key role in ensuring a steady pipeline of qualified professionals.
