The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has confirmed a major expansion of the river cruise sector, with 21 new ships scheduled to debut in 2027. The vessels will operate across key global waterways, including the Rhine, Danube, Douro, Seine, Mekong, and Amazon, as well as rivers in North America.

The announcement was made by Andy Harmer, CLIA UK & Ireland managing director, at an industry event on 13 October 2026. Harmer emphasized the sector's growth, stating, “River cruise continues to offer an enormous amount of choice, and the investment we're seeing for 2027 demonstrates the incredible breadth of the sector.”

New vessels and first-time entrants

Among the confirmed newbuilds, AmaWaterways will introduce three ships: AmaRudi, AmaFiora, and AmaMaya. Celebrity Cruises will make its river cruise debut with Celebrity Compass and Celebrity Seeker, marking a significant strategic move for the ocean line. Emerald Cruises will add Emerald Lumi and Emerald Nova, while Uniworld will launch S.S. Audrey, S.S. Marlene, and S.S. São Rafael.

Other notable additions include Amadeus River Cruises' AMADEUS Mira and CroisiEurope's RV Brasilian Dream, the latter expanding operations on South American waterways. The diverse lineup reflects a broad range of itineraries and onboard experiences, from luxury to expedition-style cruising.

Training and engagement initiatives

To support the growing fleet, CLIA is enhancing its river cruise training and engagement programs. A 'Week on the Rivers' webinar series will provide agents with insights into the new ships and destinations. The upcoming RiverView conference, scheduled for March 2027, will feature a two-night sailing from Budapest to Vienna, offering travel advisors hands-on experience aboard a river vessel.

These initiatives aim to equip agents with the knowledge needed to sell river cruises effectively, particularly as demand for Amazon River itineraries and other long-haul routes grows.

Emerging trends in river cruising

The 2027 expansion aligns with several key trends identified by CLIA. There is a growing appetite for long-haul destinations, with more travelers seeking voyages on the Mekong, Amazon, and other far-flung rivers. Shorter sailings are also gaining popularity, appealing to time-constrained professionals and first-time cruisers.

Immersive travel experiences remain a priority, with operators incorporating local culture, cuisine, and active excursions into itineraries. Solo river cruising is another notable trend, with dedicated solo departures and accommodation options becoming more common across the industry.

The investment in new tonnage underscores the confidence that cruise lines have in the river sector's long-term prospects. As the fleet expands, competition will intensify, but the variety of ships and itineraries will provide travelers with unprecedented choice.

For travel agents, the 2027 season presents significant sales opportunities. CLIA's training programs and the RiverView conference are designed to help agents capitalize on this growth, ensuring they can match clients with the right vessel and itinerary.

The river cruise industry's resilience and innovation continue to drive its appeal, and the 21 new ships announced for 2027 are a testament to its vitality. With a mix of established players and new entrants, the sector is poised for a dynamic year ahead.
