dnata, the Dubai-based air and travel services group, has unveiled a AED 175 million (US$47.6 million) investment to modernise its ground support equipment (GSE) fleet across the UAE. The programme, which began at the start of the year, will introduce more than 340 new assets at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC), positioning the handler for the next wave of traffic growth in the emirate.

The investment is squarely aimed at improving safety and operational resilience. New equipment will feature AI-enabled detection cameras and upgraded aircraft loaders, while dnata is also strengthening its pushback and towing capabilities to keep aircraft movements flowing smoothly. Nabil Sultan Al Murr, Group CEO of dnata, stressed the long lead times involved in fleet planning: “Ground equipment has long procurement and delivery cycles, so fleet planning needs to stay several years ahead of demand.”

dnata’s move comes as Dubai’s aviation sector continues to expand, with passenger numbers at DXB forecast to climb and DWC ramping up its role as a second hub. The new GSE will support airlines operating from both airports, ensuring that ground handling keeps pace with schedule growth and turnaround demands.

Technology at the core

Beyond hardware, dnata is embedding technology into its ground operations. The company is exploring automated aircraft docking systems and 3D printing for GSE components, which could reduce downtime and maintenance costs. These innovations are set to be showcased at the upcoming Airport Show 2026, underlining dnata’s commitment to evolving its ground handling model.

The investment also reflects a broader industry trend towards smarter, safer ground operations. As airlines and airports push for greater efficiency, handlers like dnata are investing in equipment that can reduce human error and improve turnaround times. The AI-enabled cameras, for instance, can detect potential hazards in real time, helping to prevent incidents before they occur.

dnata’s global footprint remains substantial. The group operates approximately 4,700 motorised GSE assets across 86 airports, handling over 888,000 aircraft turns and processing 3.2 million tonnes of cargo in the 2025–26 financial year. This latest UAE investment is part of a wider strategy to enhance reliability across its network, which also includes recent moves such as merging Travelbag into Imagine Cruising to broaden its UK leisure offer.

For travel professionals, the investment signals dnata’s confidence in Dubai’s long-term aviation growth. It also highlights the importance of proactive fleet planning in an industry where equipment lead times can stretch for years. As safety milestones and incidents continue to shape the sector, dnata’s focus on advanced safety features is timely.

The new equipment will be deployed across dnata’s UAE operations, which serve a mix of full-service and low-cost carriers. The company has not disclosed which specific airlines will benefit first, but the investment is expected to enhance overall ground handling capacity at both DXB and DWC.

dnata’s commitment to technology is not limited to the UAE. The group has been rolling out digital tools across its global network, including automated resource planning and real-time tracking of GSE. These efforts are designed to improve transparency for airline customers and reduce operational bottlenecks.

With the Airport Show 2026 on the horizon, dnata is likely to use the platform to demonstrate its latest innovations. The company’s participation will be closely watched by industry peers, as ground handling becomes an increasingly competitive and technology-driven segment.

For now, the AED 175 million investment underscores dnata’s role as a key player in Dubai’s aviation ecosystem. As the emirate continues to invest in its airports and airline capacity, ground handlers like dnata are ensuring they have the equipment and technology to match.
