Etihad Airways has taken a significant step into West Africa by signing a strategic Memorandum of Understanding with Accra-based Africa World Airlines. The agreement, finalized in the Ghanaian capital, lays the groundwork for a comprehensive partnership spanning codeshare and interline cooperation, cargo collaboration and frequent flyer programme integration.

Network expansion and seamless travel

Under the MoU, Etihad passengers will be able to book a single ticket connecting through Accra to multiple destinations across Ghana and the broader West African region. In return, Africa World Airlines customers will gain access to Etihad's global network of 118 destinations via its Abu Dhabi hub. This reciprocal arrangement is designed to simplify itineraries for business and leisure travellers alike, eliminating the need for separate bookings and multiple check-ins.

The partnership also targets the cargo segment, linking Ghanaian and West African exporters with Etihad Cargo's worldwide capacity. This is particularly relevant for perishable goods, textiles and other high-value exports that require reliable air freight connections.

Loyalty members of both carriers will benefit from expanded earning and redemption opportunities, a move that should encourage repeat business and deepen customer engagement across both networks.

Timeline and implementation

The MoU takes effect from 24 July 2026, with a phased rollout of the various cooperation areas. Etihad's own direct Abu Dhabi–Accra service is scheduled to launch on 24 March 2027. Combined itineraries will go on sale once the interline component becomes operational, likely ahead of the direct flight launch.

Arik De, Chief Commercial and Revenue Officer of Etihad Airways, described Ghana as a dynamic aviation market. “We are here to grow with Ghana,” he said, signalling the airline's long-term commitment to the region. Sohail Mahmood, Chief Operating Officer of Africa World Airlines, welcomed the deal, highlighting the advantages it brings to Ghanaian travellers and international businesses operating in West Africa.

This is not Etihad's first foray into West African partnerships. The carrier earlier signed an interline deal with Air Peace that opened up 20 West African routes, demonstrating a clear strategy to build connectivity across the region without relying solely on its own metal.

Strategic context

The agreement comes amid growing trade and travel flows between Ghana and the United Arab Emirates. A direct commercial link between Accra and Abu Dhabi has long been seen as a natural next step, and this partnership provides the commercial framework to make it viable. For Africa World Airlines, the tie-up offers access to a global network that would otherwise be out of reach for a regional carrier. For Etihad, it provides a cost-effective way to extend its footprint into a continent where many Gulf carriers are competing for market share.

Further details on the cooperation, including specific routes and loyalty programme mechanics, are expected to be announced as implementation progresses. Industry observers will be watching to see how quickly the interline and codeshare services come online, and whether the partnership expands to include additional African carriers.
