Air India has taken a significant step in reshaping its domestic-to-international connectivity with the launch of its Easy Connect service, a hub-and-spoke model designed to streamline travel for passengers originating from secondary Indian cities. The inaugural flight, AI1111, departed from Varanasi’s Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport on 25 June 2026, marking the first implementation of a government-backed initiative to reduce reliance on foreign transit hubs.

How Easy Connect Works

The service allows passengers to check in for their entire journey at their point of origin, including baggage transfer to the final international destination. Immigration clearance is also completed at the departure airport, eliminating the need for transit formalities at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport or overseas hubs such as Dubai International (DXB), Singapore Changi (SIN), or Hamad International (DOH) in Doha. This is a direct response to the inconvenience Indian travellers have long faced when connecting through airports like Dubai or Singapore, where visa requirements and unfamiliar procedures often cause delays.

Campbell Wilson, CEO and Managing Director of Air India, emphasised the operational shift: “This service addresses the inconvenience faced by Indian travellers who previously had to transit through overseas hubs. By enabling through check-in and immigration at the point of departure, we are making international travel more seamless for passengers from cities like Varanasi.”

Phased Rollout Across 11 Cities

Air India plans to extend Easy Connect to 11 additional cities, including Ahmedabad, Chennai, and Mumbai, in a phased rollout. The Varanasi-Delhi route currently offers connections to 17 international destinations, including London Heathrow (LHR), New York JFK, and Singapore. The airline’s broader transformation programme, which includes fleet modernisation and service upgrades, underpins this expansion.

Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, Minister of Civil Aviation, inaugurated the service at Varanasi, stating: “Today we take a major step forward towards realising our vision of making air travel more accessible and building a future-ready, self-reliant Indian aviation industry.” The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s National Civil Aviation Policy, which promotes hub-and-spoke operations to enhance connectivity from tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

Operational Details and Passenger Requirements

Passengers using Easy Connect must complete pre-departure processes, including DigiYatra enrolment for Indian nationals, which uses facial recognition for contactless airport entry. Bookings are now open across all channels, including Air India’s website, mobile app, and global distribution systems such as Amadeus, Sabre, and Travelport.

The service is particularly relevant for travel agents and tour operators who can now offer clients from non-metro cities a simpler itinerary without the need for transit visas or multiple check-ins. For corporate travel managers, the elimination of immigration at transit points reduces trip complexity and potential delays.

Industry Context

Air India’s move comes as Indian carriers increasingly compete with Gulf airlines like Emirates and Qatar Airways, which have long dominated the India-to-long-haul market via their hubs. The Easy Connect model mirrors the domestic feed strategies of carriers such as IndiGo and SpiceJet, but with the added advantage of immigration clearance at origin. This could shift traffic away from foreign hubs, particularly for passengers from cities like Varanasi, Ahmedabad, and Chennai.

In related developments, Virgin Atlantic Deepens India Network as Premium Outbound Demand Surges, highlighting the growing competition for India’s outbound market. Meanwhile, Emirates Hits 1 Million Starlink Connections, Plans Live TV on Ice, underscoring the technological investments Gulf carriers are making to retain passengers.

For travel technology vendors, the integration of DigiYatra and through-check-in processes presents opportunities to develop seamless passenger processing solutions. The initiative also signals a shift in Indian aviation policy that could influence airport infrastructure planning at hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

Air India’s Easy Connect service is a concrete step toward reducing the friction Indian travellers experience when flying internationally, and it positions the airline to capture a larger share of the growing outbound market. As the rollout expands, industry stakeholders—from hoteliers to destination marketing organisations—should monitor how this model affects passenger flows and booking patterns.
