Garuda Indonesia has launched a major initiative to boost multi-destination travel across the archipelago, offering more than 170,000 complimentary domestic roundtrip seats to international passengers. The program, valid for travel between 1 August and 30 November 2026, is designed to move visitor flows beyond the traditional gateways of Jakarta and Denpasar and spread tourism revenue more evenly across Indonesia's many islands.
Under the "Free Domestic Flight" scheme, travelers holding roundtrip international tickets on Garuda Indonesia can add a domestic roundtrip segment to their itinerary at no extra fare. The offer applies to passengers originating from 14 cities across 10 countries, giving them a cost-effective way to combine, for example, a Bali beach holiday with a cultural stop in Yogyakarta or a wildlife expedition in Komodo National Park.
Prina Eka Putri, Garuda Indonesia's Marketing Group Head, emphasized the strategic intent behind the promotion. "Indonesia offers far more than a single destination. By making onward domestic travel easier, we want international travellers to stay longer, explore more regions, and experience more of what Indonesia has to offer," she said. The airline is betting that easier internal connectivity will encourage visitors to extend their stays, a key driver for higher tourism spend.
The economic rationale is clear. Agny Gallus Pratama, Southeast Asia Branch Manager and Head of the Free Domestic Flight Project Management Office, pointed to the ripple effect on local businesses. "When visitors travel further and stay longer, the economic impact can extend to hotels, restaurants, local transportation, tourism operators, and MSMEs across the regions," Pratama noted. This aligns with Indonesia's broader push to develop secondary destinations and reduce overtourism pressure on Bali and Jakarta.
Network and booking details
Eligible routes cover Garuda Indonesia's domestic network, which spans more than 40 airports, including hubs in Surabaya, Medan, Makassar, and Lombok. The free domestic leg must be booked in conjunction with the international ticket, and standard baggage and fare rules apply. The airline has set up a dedicated webpage with full terms and conditions, including blackout dates and booking windows.
For travel agents, the program represents a selling point for Indonesia itineraries. "This is a practical way to encourage clients to see more of the country without blowing their budget," said a Jakarta-based travel consultant who asked not to be named. "The free domestic leg makes it easier to sell a two-centre or three-centre holiday."
The initiative also strengthens Garuda Indonesia's competitive position against regional rivals such as Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines, which offer extensive connecting networks but not free domestic add-ons. By bundling international and domestic travel, the flag carrier aims to become the preferred choice for travelers wanting to explore Indonesia in depth.
Tourism stakeholders have welcomed the move. The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) noted that longer stays typically translate into higher occupancy and ancillary spending. "Any program that extends visitor duration is positive for the hospitality sector," said a PHRI spokesperson. Local tour operators, especially those in less-visited regions like North Sumatra and East Nusa Tenggara, are expected to benefit from increased demand.
Garuda Indonesia's free domestic seat offer is part of a broader trend among Asian carriers to use domestic feed to attract international traffic. For example, Thai AirAsia has been expanding its domestic network to capture peak-season demand, while other airlines are experimenting with stopover packages. The Indonesian flag carrier's approach, however, is more aggressive in scale, with over 170,000 seats allocated.
Travel advisors should note that the offer is available only for roundtrip international tickets, and the domestic segment must be flown in the same booking. The airline recommends early booking, as seats are limited and expected to be taken up quickly, especially for popular routes like Jakarta-Bali and Denpasar-Labuan Bajo.

The program underscores the airline's commitment to enhancing Indonesia's appeal as a multi-destination holiday option, a strategy that could reshape how international travelers plan their Indonesian journeys.
