Guizhou Province has stepped up its push to become a leading sojourn destination in the Greater Bay Area, unveiling a new tourism initiative at the “Sojourn in Guizhou” International Promotion Conference held in Macao on 17 October. The event, co-hosted by several Guizhou government departments, drew around 200 cultural and tourism representatives from both Macao and Guizhou, underscoring the province’s intent to deepen bilateral cooperation and expand its long-stay tourism sector.

Three signature sojourn belts

At the conference, Guizhou introduced three flagship sojourn belts: Cool Summer Retreat, Sunny South Guizhou, and Wellness & Healing. These are complemented by a range of themed tour routes and sojourn products designed to cater to different traveller preferences, from summer escapes to health-focused retreats. The province also rolled out a comprehensive “Five-Heart” service guarantee aimed at Macao residents, covering property selection, secure transactions, loan support, and streamlined administrative procedures.

The initiative is part of Guizhou’s broader strategy to leverage its natural and cultural assets to attract longer-stay visitors, particularly from the nearby Greater Bay Area. By positioning itself as a sojourn hub, the province hopes to boost tourism revenue and stimulate local economies beyond traditional sightseeing.

Key partnerships signed

Several strategic agreements were formalised during the conference. The Guizhou Tourism Industry Development Group signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Travel Industry Council of Macau, while the Guizhou Civil Aviation Industry Group inked a deal with Air Macau to enhance air connectivity and promote travel between the two regions. These partnerships are expected to facilitate smoother travel arrangements and open new marketing channels for Guizhou’s sojourn offerings.

In addition, the Guizhou Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism awarded a plaque to the Guizhou Tourism Industry Development Group for its Colourful Guizhou International Tourist Transit Service Centre in Macao, recognising the centre’s role in supporting inbound travellers and promoting Guizhou as a transit and sojourn destination.

The conference also featured networking sessions, enterprise exhibitions, and showcases of Guizhou’s cultural heritage, tourism merchandise, and local delicacies. Attendees received practical guides on travelling to and purchasing property in Guizhou, further enhancing the appeal for potential sojourners.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts to integrate Guizhou’s cultural, tourism, and economic resources. The province has been actively courting visitors from Macao and Hong Kong, and the new sojourn products are designed to offer immersive experiences that go beyond typical short-term tours. For travel professionals, the development signals growing opportunities in the sojourn segment, which is gaining traction across Asia as travellers seek longer, more meaningful stays.

Macao itself has been a hub for tourism promotion events, with recent gatherings such as the Global Tourism Economy Forum highlighting the region’s role in facilitating cross-border tourism dialogue. Guizhou’s participation in this space underscores the province’s commitment to building strong ties with Macao’s travel trade.

For airlines and tour operators, the partnership between Guizhou Civil Aviation Industry Group and Air Macau could lead to increased flight frequencies or promotional fares, making the province more accessible to Macao-based travellers. Similarly, the agreement with the Travel Industry Council of Macau is likely to result in joint marketing campaigns and packaged sojourn deals.

Guizhou’s sojourn tourism push comes at a time when the Greater Bay Area is seeing a surge in cross-border travel and investment. With its cool summer climate, sunny southern regions, and wellness offerings, the province is well-positioned to capture a share of this growing market. The conference’s success in securing key partnerships and showcasing its products is a clear signal of Guizhou’s ambition to become a premier sojourn destination in the region.
