Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has released its 2027–28 season, a collection of more than 500 ports of call that prioritizes depth over distance. The German luxury line, known for its small-ship fleet and expedition heritage, is targeting seasoned travelers with routes that emphasize first-time experiences and unusual geographic combinations.

New Frontiers in the Pacific and Indian Oceans

Among the standout deployments is a 29-day voyage aboard EUROPA linking Valparaíso, Chile, with San Francisco, California—a rare single-itinerary connection spanning South, Central, and North America. The route blends multiple coastlines and cultures into one continuous journey, appealing to luxury clients seeking extended, narrative-driven travel.

The Philippines emerges as a focal point, with in-depth itineraries featuring 13 calls across 10 ports. Accessible only to smaller vessels, these lesser-known islands and bays offer an intimate alternative to mass-market Southeast Asian cruises. Meanwhile, EUROPA 2 ventures into Papua New Guinea and Palau, destinations largely untouched by mainstream cruise tourism.

In a first for the brand, HANSEATIC nature will deploy in the Indian Ocean during the winter season, sailing to Madagascar, the Seychelles, and Mauritius. The itinerary includes remote islands, coral reefs, and uninhabited atolls where strict visitor limits preserve natural integrity. This move positions Hapag-Lloyd to capture demand for off-peak, nature-focused luxury cruising in a region traditionally dominated by summer sailings.

Polar Intensives and Inland Waterways

The expedition program retains its polar focus with new 14-day itineraries concentrating on South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula. These compact voyages are designed for travelers who want intensity without extended time commitments—a segment that has grown as luxury expedition cruising matures.

Equally distinctive is the Great Lakes voyage aboard HANSEATIC inspiration, the only cruise to combine all five Great Lakes with the St. Lawrence River in a single journey. Linking Toronto and Montreal with lesser-known coastal communities, it offers a fresh perspective on North America’s inland waterways, a region seeing increased interest from European and North American luxury travelers alike.

For biodiversity-focused clients, new itineraries along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast provide immersive access to rainforests and wildlife, while the Kimberley region of Western Australia—with its towering waterfalls and Indigenous heritage sites—remains a highlight for those seeking remote, visually dramatic landscapes.

Hapag-Lloyd’s expedition ships, carrying fewer than 230 guests, continue to unlock remote regions through Zodiac landings and expert-led exploration. The brand’s philosophy—that luxury is about access to places and perspectives that feel genuinely new—resonates with a clientele that has already seen much of the world.

This season also reflects broader industry trends: the rise of small-ship expedition cruising, demand for off-peak deployments in warmer waters, and the appeal of combined land-sea itineraries. For travel professionals, the program offers clear differentiation from mass-market competitors like Carnival Cruise Line, which recently revealed its Ace Class prototype for 2029, or the loyalty-driven partnerships seen in Explora Journeys and Hilton Honors.

As luxury cruise lines jostle for share in the expedition segment—Crystal Cruises recently launched wellness retreats for 2027, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises added festive shore excursions for the 2026 Mediterranean winter—Hapag-Lloyd’s emphasis on first-time ports and rare route combinations positions it to capture the high-end traveler seeking genuine discovery.
