Hilton has expanded its footprint in Southeast Asia with the launch of Kahavadi Chiang Rai, the company's first property in Northern Thailand. The hotel, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, opened along the Mae Kok River in Chiang Rai province, a region known for its temples and hill-tribe culture.

Design and Dining Rooted in Local Heritage

The 167-room hotel draws inspiration from historic Northern Thai merchant houses. Interiors feature works by local artists, and the architecture reflects the region's Lanna heritage. Three dining outlets are on site: Larderley serves Thai, Asian, and international cuisine; Tasabiang focuses on refined Northern Thai dishes; and The Ledger bar offers craft cocktails and small plates.

Guests can also visit the eForea spa, which provides traditional Tok Sen treatments—a Northern Thai massage technique using a wooden hammer. The spa adds a wellness dimension that aligns with broader industry trends toward experiential travel, as seen in recent developments like the ASEAN-backed HWONFEX 2026 declaration targeting the $9 trillion wellness economy.

MICE and Cultural Access

Kahavadi Chiang Rai offers 1,980 square metres of event space, including a riverside lawn and a ballroom, positioning it for the MICE segment. Its location provides easy access to landmarks such as the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) and the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), making it attractive for incentive groups and corporate retreats seeking cultural immersion.

Alexandra Murray, Hilton's area vice president for Southeast Asia, said: “The opening of Kahavadi Chiang Rai marks our first presence in the city and underscores our confidence in Northern Thailand’s long-term appeal.” The hotel participates in Hilton Honors, allowing loyalty members to earn and redeem points.

Strategic Context for Northern Thailand

Chiang Rai has long been overshadowed by Chiang Mai as a tourism hub, but recent infrastructure improvements and growing interest in off-the-beaten-path destinations are shifting attention. The province is served by Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI), with connections from Bangkok, and is increasingly featured in tour itineraries that combine cultural sites with nature experiences.

Hilton's entry follows a broader trend of international hotel groups expanding into secondary Thai cities. The Curio Collection, Hilton's soft-brand portfolio, allows properties to maintain independent character while leveraging the group's distribution and loyalty systems. This model has proven effective in destinations where authenticity is a key selling point.

For travel advisors and tour operators, Kahavadi Chiang Rai adds a new upscale option in a market that has traditionally relied on boutique hotels and guesthouses. The property's MICE facilities also open opportunities for corporate events in a setting that blends business with cultural discovery.

As Thailand continues to evolve its tourism strategy—highlighted in recent discussions on ESG and long-term stewardship—properties like Kahavadi Chiang Rai represent a shift toward quality over quantity. The hotel's emphasis on local art, cuisine, and wellness aligns with the growing demand for meaningful travel experiences among both leisure and business travellers.
