Hong Kong Airlines has officially launched its first nonstop service linking Hong Kong with Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The inaugural flight departed on 29 August, with ceremonies held at both Hong Kong International Airport and Urumqi Tianshan International Airport. The route operates twice weekly using an Airbus A330, offering travelers a new gateway between the Pearl River Delta and Northwest China.

Strategic expansion and policy alignment

The new service is a key element of Hong Kong Airlines' broader network strategy, which aims to provide more travel options for passengers while supporting the Chinese government's recent expansion of the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) for mainland residents traveling to Hong Kong and Macao. Jeff Sun, President of Hong Kong Airlines, emphasized the policy link: “The launch of this new destination also responds to the nation’s policy of expanding Individual Visit Scheme for mainland residents travelling to Hong Kong and Macao.”

Urumqi is a vital aviation hub in Northwest China and a central node on the Silk Road Economic Belt. The city's blend of modern infrastructure and natural attractions—such as the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar and the Tianshan Grand Canyon—makes it an appealing destination for both leisure and business travelers.

Connectivity and onward links

The new route is expected to enhance connectivity for passengers from Xinjiang and other parts of Northwest China, allowing them to connect through Hong Kong to a wide range of destinations across Southeast Asia, Australia, and North America. Conversely, Urumqi's position as a regional aviation hub provides onward connections to Central Asia, opening new possibilities for trade and tourism.

Hong Kong Airlines' decision to add Urumqi follows a pattern of strategic route development seen across the industry. For instance, Korean Air is increasing its Delhi-Seoul frequency, while United has announced a slate of new international routes—all moves that reflect a broader recovery and expansion in global air travel.

Schedule and booking

Flights depart Hong Kong for Urumqi on Tuesdays and Saturdays, with return services on Wednesdays and Sundays. Tickets are available for purchase through the Hong Kong Airlines website and other booking channels. The airline has not indicated any plans to increase frequency in the near term, but the route is expected to perform well given the pent-up demand for travel to and from the region.

The launch also reinforces Hong Kong's status as an international aviation hub, aligning with the Belt and Road Initiative's goals of fostering closer economic and cultural ties. As the airline continues to expand its network, industry observers will be watching to see whether Urumqi becomes a stepping stone for further growth into Central Asia.

For travel professionals, the new service offers an additional option for clients seeking to explore Xinjiang or connect onward to Central Asia. The twice-weekly schedule may be sufficient for leisure demand, while business travelers could benefit from the convenient timing. As always, agents should verify current entry requirements and visa policies for mainland China, especially for those traveling under the IVS.

Hong Kong Airlines' move is part of a wider trend of carriers adding routes to secondary Chinese cities. SriLankan Airlines recently restored its Kuwait service, and Finnair is tapping into Indian demand for Lapland. These developments highlight the dynamic nature of route planning in the post-pandemic era.
