Hyatt Hotels South Africa is marking Heritage Day with a multi-property culinary programme designed to showcase the country's diverse food culture. Running from Heritage Day through the long weekend, the initiative brings together chefs, local ingredients, and traditional recipes under the theme "Taste Home: Every root has a table. Every table tells South Africa."

The programme spans Hyatt's portfolio in Cape Town and Gauteng, offering guests a mix of high teas, braai specials, and regional buffets. It reflects a broader industry trend of using food as a gateway to cultural storytelling, a strategy that resonates with both leisure and business travellers seeking authentic experiences.

Cape Town: Cape Malay flavours and high tea

At the Hyatt Regency Cape Town, the DOS TEA High Tea Experience will feature heritage-inspired creations by Chef Grace Ilanga. The hotel's Cape Kitchen & Cafe will serve an authentic Cape Malay buffet, highlighting dishes such as curries and bredies, while a Heritage Long Weekend Celebration Platter is available for sharing.

The Cape Malay culinary tradition, rooted in the city's history, offers a distinct selling point for hotels looking to differentiate their F&B offerings. For travel agents and tour operators, such themed dining events can be packaged as part of a broader Cape Town itinerary.

Gauteng: braai, sundowners, and live rugby

In Sandton, Hyatt House Sandton will host Treehouse Bar Evening Sundowners with handcrafted cocktails and tapas-style bites. The property is also offering a Heritage Braai Day Special with a 10% discount on rib-eye steak, alongside a Heritage High Tea that coincides with live rugby broadcasts.

At Hyatt House Rosebank, guests can enjoy a Rosebank Heritage High Tea and South African Comfort Classics, including gourmet burgers and chicken curry. The Spring Rooftop & Poolside Sundowners will provide a relaxed setting with live entertainment, appealing to both hotel guests and local visitors.

These activations are part of a wider push by Hyatt to embed local culture into its guest experience, a move that aligns with the group's global brand strategy. Similar initiatives have been seen at other Hyatt properties, such as the recent opening of an outdoor dining venue at Hyatt Hyderabad Gachibowli.

Park Hyatt Johannesburg: high tea and cross-cultural fusion

At Park Hyatt Johannesburg, Chef Chrizelle Venter will present a Heritage High Tea featuring chocolate artistry and botanical tea pairings. The hotel will also host the Whispers of Diriyah event, blending Middle Eastern and South African cuisines, and a Spring Heritage Terrace Brunch highlighting seasonal local ingredients.

The fusion of Middle Eastern and South African flavours reflects the growing interest in cross-cultural dining experiences, a trend that is gaining traction in the luxury segment. For MICE planners, such events can serve as unique evening functions or team-building activities.

Hyatt's Heritage Day programme is a timely example of how hotels can leverage local traditions to drive occupancy and F&B revenue during shoulder periods. It also provides a template for other hospitality groups looking to strengthen their cultural ties, similar to how Bahia Principe celebrated two decades in Tenerife with a sustainability-focused push.

For travel professionals, the events underscore the importance of culinary tourism as a key driver of destination appeal. As travellers increasingly seek immersive experiences, hotels that curate authentic local programmes are better positioned to attract both domestic and international guests.

The Heritage Day celebrations run through the long weekend, offering ample opportunity for last-minute bookings. Hyatt's approach demonstrates how a well-executed cultural calendar can enhance a property's profile and contribute to the local tourism ecosystem.
