Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has accelerated its expansion, signing 47 new hotels during the first half of fiscal year 2027. The Tata Group-owned hospitality giant now operates a portfolio of 670 hotels, with 20 properties opened in the same period, according to a company statement.

The signings span IHCL's full brand spectrum, from luxury to midscale, and include both domestic and international destinations. Suma Venkatesh, Executive Vice President of Real Estate & Development at IHCL, said the momentum puts the company ahead of its Accelerate 2030 roadmap. “With a strong momentum of 47 signings and 20 openings in H1 FY2027, IHCL is on track to achieve its guidance under Accelerate 2030 of a 700-hotel portfolio ahead of time,” she said.

Brand and market diversification

IHCL's growth strategy leans on a mix of capital-light and capital-heavy contracts, allowing the company to scale profitably across varied markets. The brandscape now includes ten distinct hotel brands, reflecting India's diverse travel demand. In the luxury segment, recent signings include four Taj hotels, a Brij, and an Atmantan property. The midscale segment saw 19 signings under the Ginger and Tree of Life brands.

Domestically, IHCL strengthened its presence in key metros such as Mumbai, Gurugram, Goa, and Hyderabad, while also entering emerging destinations like Kandla, Ayodhya, and Tadoba. These moves align with growing demand from both leisure and business travellers in India's tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

Internationally, the Taj brand expanded with new openings in Frankfurt and Kruger, South Africa. These additions bring IHCL's total operating hotels to 390, with the remainder of the portfolio under development.

The company's focus on asset-light growth is evident in its contract mix, which includes management contracts, franchises, and leases. This approach reduces capital intensity while enabling faster brand penetration, a model that has become a benchmark for Indian hospitality groups.

IHCL's expansion comes as India's hospitality sector experiences a robust upcycle, driven by rising domestic travel, corporate demand, and government infrastructure push. The company's ability to sign 47 hotels in six months underscores its competitive positioning against rivals like The Oberoi Group and ITC Hotels.

Industry analysts note that IHCL's diversified brand portfolio allows it to cater to different traveller segments, from ultra-luxury to budget-conscious millennials. The addition of Atmantan, a wellness-focused brand, also taps into the growing wellness tourism trend.

With the 700-hotel target now within reach, IHCL is likely to continue its aggressive signing pace in the second half of the fiscal year. The company's international footprint, particularly in South Africa and Europe, is expected to grow further as it seeks to attract inbound travellers to India and cater to outbound Indian tourists.

For travel professionals, IHCL's expansion signals increased inventory and new opportunities for partnerships, particularly in emerging Indian destinations. The company's focus on midscale brands like Ginger also aligns with the rising demand for affordable, quality accommodation in India's smaller cities.
