InterContinental Muscat, one of the Omani capital's flagship luxury properties, reinforced its long-standing community health commitment by partnering with the Oman Cancer Association (OCA) for a breast cancer awareness session on 26 October 2026. Held at the hotel's Sur meeting venue, the event was timed to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month and drew participation from across the property's workforce.

The collaboration between the hotel and OCA spans roughly a decade, during which the two organisations have worked to promote health education and community support in Muscat. This year's programme zeroed in on breast health and the critical role of early detection, with a specific focus on female employees and members of the hotel's management team.

Leading the session was Dr Rajyashree N. Kutty, a specialist surgeon with 25 years of experience in breast diseases. Dr Kutty delivered practical guidance and fielded questions from attendees, equipping them with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their own health. Her presentation combined clinical expertise with accessible advice, a format that resonated with the audience.

Sebastian Thomas, General Manager of InterContinental Muscat, underscored the hotel's broader philosophy: “We believe hospitality extends beyond caring for our guests to making a positive difference in the wider community.” His remarks align with the property's ongoing corporate social responsibility initiatives, which have included previous health awareness drives and community outreach.

A structured programme for employee wellbeing

The session was structured to maximise engagement, featuring an awareness talk, an open discussion, and a 30-minute interactive segment. This format allowed participants to delve deeper into the subject matter and address individual concerns in a supportive environment. Basim Al Hasani, the hotel's Director of Human Resources, highlighted the importance of fostering a workplace that prioritises employee wellbeing, noting that such initiatives are integral to the hotel's internal culture.

InterContinental Muscat has committed to holding the awareness session every October, ensuring that breast health and early detection remain recurring themes for its staff. This annual cadence reflects a growing trend among hospitality employers in the Gulf to integrate health education into their employee engagement strategies.

The initiative also resonates with broader industry movements. For instance, Iceland's Langjökull ice tunnel glowed pink for a similar cancer awareness campaign, demonstrating how travel and tourism assets can amplify public health messages. Meanwhile, other InterContinental properties have pursued their own community-focused events, such as InterContinental Muscat's recognition of Omani Women's Day and InterContinental Bangkok's alpine tea experience, underscoring the brand's diverse approach to local engagement.

For travel professionals, this story highlights the growing importance of corporate social responsibility in hotel operations, particularly in the Middle East where community ties are vital. As hotels increasingly position themselves as community hubs, initiatives like this not only bolster employee morale but also enhance brand reputation among guests and partners. The property's commitment to an annual session sets a benchmark for other hospitality operators in the region.

InterContinental Muscat, part of IHG Hotels & Resorts, continues to leverage its local partnerships to deliver meaningful impact. The hotel's collaboration with OCA serves as a model for how luxury properties can integrate health awareness into their operational calendar, a practice that may resonate with other IHG properties worldwide.
