Journey Beyond, Australia's experiential travel group, has marked the grand reopening of its Reefworld pontoon at Hardy Reef in the Whitsundays with a dedicated industry event. The occasion, branded Reefworld Reimagined, brought together travel media and sector representatives to preview the revamped facility, which sits within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

The reopening programme began with an overnight stay on Hamilton Island, where guests dined at the Catseye Pool Club before cruising out to the reef. The formal proceedings opened with a Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country delivered by Robbie Congoo, a Ngaro and Gia traditional owner, underscoring the cultural significance of the site.

Shaun Cawood, General Manager of Cruise Whitsundays, highlighted the strategic importance of the relaunch. "The reopening of Reefworld marks an exciting new chapter for overnight stays on the Great Barrier Reef," he said. The refurbishment forms part of a broader A$42 million investment by Journey Beyond in the region, which also includes the construction of a new 36-metre catamaran.

Alicia Triggs, Executive General Manager of Sales and Partnerships at Journey Beyond, noted that the investment reflects the company's long-term commitment to the destination. "This is about delivering world-class experiences while supporting the local tourism economy," she added.

Reef-immersive stays and upgraded amenities

Jennifer Vandekreeke, Managing Director of Experiences and Attractions, officially cut the ribbon to open the pontoon, describing Reefworld as a "globally unique reef-immersive stay." The redesigned facility now offers an all-inclusive package that includes a three-course dining menu featuring local seafood and premium Australian wines, alongside guided snorkelling and scuba diving excursions.

Guests at the reopening event enjoyed a seafood lunch and took part in marine activities, with the day concluding with a sunset viewing and an overnight stay in the upgraded Reefsleep accommodation. The pontoon's redesign aims to deepen visitor connection with the reef environment, a key selling point for both leisure and trade partners.

The investment comes as Australian reef tourism continues to recover, with operators looking to differentiate through premium, immersive offerings. Journey Beyond's move aligns with broader industry trends toward experiential travel, as seen in recent developments such as Ponant's expanded 2028 programme and the return of Grand Princess to year-round Brisbane cruising.

For travel agents and tour operators, the revamped Reefworld provides a new anchor product for Great Barrier Reef itineraries, particularly for clients seeking overnight reef experiences. The combination of upgraded accommodation, dining, and marine activities positions Reefworld as a premium option in the Whitsundays portfolio.

Journey Beyond continues to expand its experiential offerings across Australia, and the Reefworld reopening is expected to bolster its presence in the marine tourism segment. The company's investment in the region also signals confidence in the long-term recovery of international and domestic travel to Queensland.

As the travel industry increasingly focuses on sustainable and immersive experiences, Reefworld's relaunch offers a case study in how operators can enhance existing assets to meet evolving consumer expectations. The pontoon's new features are designed to appeal to both first-time visitors and repeat guests, with a strong emphasis on environmental stewardship and cultural respect.
