Thailand's domestic travel landscape is undergoing a structural shift, with coastal destinations capturing a growing share of shorter, more frequent holidays. According to fresh data from Traveloka, Southeast Asia's leading travel technology platform, Krabi has emerged as the standout performer, with bookings more than doubling year-on-year. Hua Hin followed with an increase of over 80%, Pattaya around 65%, and Phuket nearly 60%.

The overall surge in staycation bookings across Thailand on Traveloka exceeded 70%, reflecting a broader behavioral change among Thai travelers. Rather than saving up for a single extended annual trip, consumers are increasingly opting for brief escapes that fit into modern, flexible lifestyles. Factors such as remote work arrangements and a heightened focus on personal well-being are driving this trend, making short breaks an attractive way to recharge without the logistical and financial burden of long-haul travel.

Coastal Destinations Lead the Charge

Krabi's appeal lies in its ability to transform an ordinary weekend into a meaningful experience. From island-hopping by long-tail boat to wellness retreats and spa treatments, the province offers a mix of natural beauty and curated activities that resonate with today's experience-driven traveler. The data underscores that accommodation alone is no longer the primary draw; travelers are seeking sea views, local culinary experiences, and immersive cultural touchpoints.

This trend is not lost on hoteliers. IHG recently signed the Holiday Inn Express Krabi Ao Nang, the first property in Thailand to feature the brand's Gen 5 design, signaling confidence in the destination's sustained demand. Meanwhile, Centara Reserve Krabi is set to open in December 2026, further expanding the luxury segment in southern Thailand. These developments indicate that both midscale and upscale operators see long-term potential in Krabi's staycation market.

Phuket, despite its mature tourism infrastructure, posted a nearly 60% increase in staycation bookings, while Pattaya and Hua Hin continue to attract weekenders from Bangkok and beyond. The data suggests that proximity to major urban centers, combined with diverse leisure offerings, is a key driver of growth.

Implications for Travel Industry Stakeholders

For airlines, hotel groups, and tour operators, the rise of the staycation presents both opportunities and challenges. Carriers like AirAsia, which recently launched a three-day flash sale on Malaysia-Thailand routes in partnership with the Tourism Authority of Thailand, may need to adjust capacity and pricing strategies to capture short-haul domestic demand. Similarly, GDS systems and travel-tech vendors should consider enhancing their platforms to support last-minute, short-stay bookings with flexible cancellation policies.

The MICE sector is also taking note. With Bangkok gearing up to host 15,000 delegates for the IMF-World Bank meetings, and Thailand winning the bid for IEEE ICRA 2030, the country is positioning itself as a hub for business events that increasingly blend with leisure. As the Hôtel Martinez report noted, 65% of corporate events are now experiential, a trend that aligns well with the staycation model.

As travel becomes more integrated into daily life, the shift toward shorter, experience-led getaways is expected to persist. Staycations are not replacing longer holidays but complementing them, providing more opportunities throughout the year for rest and reconnection. Traveloka remains committed to facilitating these experiences with a seamless booking process and a wide range of options, from beachfront resorts to boutique urban stays.

For travel professionals, the message is clear: domestic staycations are not a passing fad but a structural shift in consumer behavior. Destinations like Krabi, Hua Hin, Pattaya, and Phuket are leading the way, and those who adapt their offerings—whether through targeted marketing, flexible packages, or enhanced digital tools—will be best positioned to capture this growing segment.
