Laguindingan International Airport, operated by Aboitiz InfraCapital, partnered with Limketkai Luxe Hotel on 19 May 2026 to host a Strategic Tourism Dialogue. The gathering brought together senior representatives from Northern Mindanao's hospitality, travel, tourism, and aviation sectors to confront the ripple effects of geopolitical instability in the Middle East.

Fuel Volatility and Cost Pressures Take Center Stage

Discussions zeroed in on how volatile fuel supply conditions and escalating operational costs are reshaping airfare pricing, travel demand, and the region's competitive position as a destination. Engr. Ryan Ermac, General Manager of Laguindingan International Airport, underscored the interdependence of aviation and tourism: “When global headwinds such as volatile jet fuel prices and rising operational costs challenge our airline partners, the entire regional ecosystem feels the shift.”

The dialogue served as a platform for stakeholders to exchange strategies for navigating these headwinds. Participants examined how global affairs influence fuel availability, airline economics, and tourism mobility, with an emphasis on building resilience through collaboration.

May Unchuan, Regional Director of the Department of Tourism Region 10, highlighted the value of cross-sector engagement: “By bridging the public sector with aviation and hospitality leaders, we are actively shaping adaptive strategies to cushion the impact of global economic headwinds.”

Representatives from the Department of Tourism Region 10, the Misamis Oriental Provincial Tourism Office, and various local associations attended the event. The airport authority reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening regional connectivity and economic growth in Northern Mindanao, working closely with industry partners to navigate global uncertainties.

This initiative aligns with broader industry efforts to address infrastructure and connectivity challenges. For instance, SIWW 2026 to Address Urban Water Resilience for Global Travel Hubs highlights how major travel hubs are tackling sustainability pressures. Similarly, Hyatt Regency Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport Targets Transit Travelers with 24-Hour Check-In demonstrates how airports and hotels are innovating to meet shifting traveler demands.

The Laguindingan dialogue underscores a growing recognition that regional airports must proactively engage with geopolitical and economic trends to safeguard their tourism ecosystems. As Northern Mindanao positions itself as a competitive destination, such strategic conversations are likely to become more frequent across the Asia-Pacific region.
