Lufthansa Group is set to significantly expand its Japan network by summer 2027, responding to robust demand for travel between Europe and Japan. The airline will reintroduce its Frankfurt-Nagoya route and launch a new daily service between Frankfurt and Tokyo-Narita, lifting its weekly frequency to up to 50 flights across four Japanese airports.

The Frankfurt-Nagoya service resumes on 29 March 2027, operating three times weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Departures from Frankfurt are scheduled at 2:10 pm, arriving in Nagoya at 9:35 am the following day. Return flights leave Nagoya at 11:30 am, reaching Frankfurt by 6:30 pm. Nagoya, a key industrial hub in Aichi Prefecture, offers onward connections to destinations across Europe and South America via Frankfurt.

Starting 28 March 2027, Lufthansa will also introduce a daily seasonal service to Tokyo-Narita, complementing its existing daily flights to Tokyo-Haneda from both Frankfurt and Munich. The Narita flights depart Frankfurt at 1:45 pm, arriving at 9:30 am the next day, with return services leaving Narita at 11:20 am and landing in Frankfurt at 6:40 pm.

Fleet and cabin details

Both new routes will be operated with Boeing 787-9 aircraft, featuring Lufthansa's Allegris cabins. The configuration includes 28 business class seats, 28 premium economy seats, and 231 economy seats, offering a consistent premium experience across the expanded network.

Dieter Vranckx, Lufthansa Group's chief commercial officer, said: “Japan is a key market for the Lufthansa Group, and we are pleased to further strengthen our presence with additional capacity and the resumption of flights to Nagoya.” The expansion aims to provide customers with more travel options and support the diversification of Lufthansa's intercontinental network.

The move comes as Japan continues to attract strong inbound and outbound travel demand, with corporate and leisure segments both showing resilience. Lufthansa's expanded schedule will also benefit connecting passengers from across Europe, particularly those heading to South America via Frankfurt.

For travel professionals, the added capacity on the Japan routes presents new opportunities for corporate travel programmes, especially for industries with strong ties to Nagoya's automotive and manufacturing sectors. The daily Narita service also enhances flexibility for business travellers needing same-day connections.

Lufthansa's investment in Japan aligns with broader trends in the Asia-Pacific aviation market, where carriers are increasingly adding frequencies to capture pent-up demand. The airline's decision to use the 787-9 on these routes underscores its focus on fuel efficiency and passenger comfort.

Travel agents and tour operators can expect competitive pricing and increased availability on the Frankfurt-Nagoya and Frankfurt-Tokyo corridors, which may stimulate new package offerings and corporate contracts. The expansion also complements Lufthansa's existing services to Osaka and other Japanese cities, providing a more comprehensive network.

As the aviation industry continues to recover, Lufthansa's commitment to Japan signals confidence in the region's long-term growth. The airline's strategy of adding capacity on high-demand routes while reintroducing previously suspended services reflects a measured approach to network development.
