The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has unveiled the lineup for the 2025 Macao International Fireworks Display Contest, scheduled to run from 12 September to 4 October. This year's edition introduces large-scale drone formations alongside the traditional pyrotechnics, a first for the long-running event that has been a staple of Macao's tourism calendar since 1989.

Under the theme “Set Sail for Macao, where the Silk Road Sparkles,” the contest will feature ten international fireworks companies, including first-time participants from Brazil, Switzerland, Italy, and Portugal. Returning contenders from the UK, Philippines, and China—last year's top three—will also compete. Each nightly display will last approximately 18 minutes, with performances scheduled on 12, 19, and 25 September, and 1 and 4 October, coinciding with the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day.

Drone shows and thematic chapters

The event will unfold in three chapters: “Encounter with History,” “Encounter with Civilisation,” and “Encounter with the Future.” Over 3,400 drones will illuminate the sky during the opening and closing nights, adding a high-tech layer to the traditional fireworks. MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes emphasized the contest's role in showcasing Macao's unique blend of tourism and events, noting that the drone shows are designed to attract a broader audience and enhance the city's nighttime economy.

Spectators can view the displays from multiple vantage points across Macao, as well as from Zhuhai and Hengqin in mainland China. The event will be broadcast live on TDM channels and online platforms, extending its reach to a global audience.

Additional activities and engagement

Beyond the fireworks, the contest will include a photo competition with a new category for Hengqin residents, an interactive game with prizes, and a Mak Mak-themed Fireworks Carnival. These initiatives are part of MGTO's broader strategy to position Macao as a vibrant international destination, leveraging events to drive tourism and visitor spending.

The addition of drone shows reflects a wider trend in the travel industry, where destinations are using technology to differentiate their offerings. Macao's investment in this area is particularly notable given its status as a major gaming and entertainment hub. The city has been working to diversify its tourism appeal beyond casinos, and events like this are central to that effort.

For travel professionals, the contest represents a key period for Macao-bound bookings, especially from regional markets. The timing around the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day is expected to boost visitor numbers, and the expanded program is likely to attract repeat visitors. As festivals drive accommodation demand across Asia, Macao's fireworks contest is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend.

The event also underscores the importance of public-private collaboration in destination marketing. MGTO has worked closely with local businesses and international partners to deliver the program, and the inclusion of new countries highlights the contest's global appeal. For hoteliers and tour operators, the contest offers a clear opportunity to package experiences around the fireworks and drone shows, potentially extending stays and increasing ancillary spending.

Macao's tourism sector has shown resilience in recent years, and events like this are crucial for maintaining momentum. The city's ability to blend tradition with innovation—evident in the Parisian Macao's 10th anniversary celebrations—continues to set it apart. As the contest approaches, industry stakeholders will be watching to see how the drone shows resonate with audiences and whether they can help Macao achieve its goal of becoming a more diverse and sustainable destination.
