Malewane Lodge, the founding property of the Royal Portfolio collection, has reopened following a comprehensive renovation that marks the most significant transformation in its 27-year history. Situated within South Africa's Greater Kruger National Park, the lodge now offers refined interiors and redesigned guest spaces that preserve its heritage while introducing contemporary touches.

Redesigned Suites and Enhanced Guest Experience

The lodge accommodates up to 20 guests across six Luxury Suites and two Royal Suites, maintaining an intimate safari atmosphere. The Royal Suites have been reconfigured to include private courtyards, handcrafted Moroccan doors, and artworks by wildlife artist Larry Norton. Luxury Suites now feature new entrance halls and heated swimming pools. The main lodge area has been expanded with a larger boutique, a redesigned bar, and an observation lounge.

Liz Biden, founder of The Royal Portfolio alongside her husband Phil Biden, commented on the transformation: "Malewane was our very first lodge. We created it with enormous love and instinct rather than a master plan." The Royal Portfolio also includes The Silo Hotel in Cape Town, La Residence in Franschhoek, and Birkenhead House in Hermanus.

The Royal Waters Spa has been upgraded with new treatment rooms and a fitness centre. Guests arriving by air are welcomed at a new arrival pavilion at the Royal Malewane Airstrip, enhancing the experience from the moment they land. Rates start at $3,230 (approximately ZAR 52,500) per person, all-inclusive.

Malewane Lodge is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, a designation that underscores its position in the luxury hospitality segment. The property's reopening comes at a time when high-end safari lodges are investing heavily in renovations to attract discerning travelers seeking exclusive experiences in Africa's premier wildlife destinations.

For travel professionals, the lodge's transformation signals a renewed focus on the Greater Kruger region as a key destination for luxury safari itineraries. The Royal Portfolio's expansion and upgrades align with broader trends in the luxury travel sector, where personalized service and unique design are increasingly valued by high-net-worth clients.

Industry observers note that the renovation of Malewane Lodge reflects a broader investment cycle in African safari lodges, with several iconic properties undergoing major refurbishments to compete for a growing pool of luxury travelers. The property's all-inclusive pricing model, which covers accommodation, meals, game drives, and select activities, simplifies booking for agents and tour operators.

For agents and operators looking to diversify their luxury safari offerings, Malewane Lodge provides a proven product with a strong brand heritage. The Royal Portfolio's reputation for quality and service, combined with the lodge's intimate scale, makes it a compelling option for clients seeking exclusivity in a well-managed reserve.

As the travel industry continues to recover, properties like Malewane Lodge are positioning themselves to capture demand from travelers willing to invest in premium experiences. The lodge's reopening is a reminder of the enduring appeal of the African safari, a segment that remains a cornerstone of luxury travel portfolios worldwide.
