Marriott International is expanding its footprint in Thailand's Andaman coast with a new agreement with KS Hotels and Resorts to develop two properties in the Matalay development in Khao Lak, Phang Nga. The project will introduce the Moxy brand to Southern Thailand and mark the debut of Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy in the country.
The two hotels — Moxy Khao Lak Memories Beach and Matalay Khao Lak, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy — will be located at the northern end of Memories Beach, connected by a 3 km track to the existing JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa. This proximity allows guests to access the resort's amenities while enjoying the distinct offerings of the new properties.
Moxy Khao Lak Memories Beach
Moxy Khao Lak Memories Beach will feature 160 rooms with a retro design inspired by surfing culture, reflecting the area's growing appeal as a lifestyle destination. The hotel will include a freeform pool, a Moxy Bar & Restaurant, and a beachfront events lawn, catering to both leisure and MICE segments.
This will be the first Moxy property in Southern Thailand, adding to the brand's portfolio that includes locations in Bangkok and Phuket. The design aims to attract younger travelers and groups seeking a vibrant, social atmosphere.
Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy debut
Matalay Khao Lak, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy will offer 60 two-bedroom apartments, each equipped with a kitchen and washer-dryer. This marks the first apartment-style offering under the Marriott Bonvoy umbrella in Thailand, targeting families and digital nomads looking for longer stays.
The apartments are designed to provide a home-away-from-home experience, with the flexibility of hotel services. This segment aligns with the growing trend of remote workers reshaping Southeast Asian beach economies, as more travelers seek extended stays in destination areas.
Rajeev Menon, President of Asia Pacific excluding China at Marriott International, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "Matalay is a ground-breaking development that will elevate Phang Nga from a tourist resort to a holistic lifestyle destination."
The hotels will offer a range of activities, including surf lessons, kayaking, and wellness facilities, positioning the area as a hub for active and wellness tourism. The development is located 75 minutes from Phuket International Airport, which is undergoing expansion to accommodate 18 million passengers annually by 2029, improving accessibility for international visitors.
This move is part of Marriott's broader strategy to expand its presence in emerging destinations across Asia-Pacific. The company has recently introduced new brands in the region, such as Series by Marriott in South Korea, and continues to diversify its offerings to meet evolving traveler preferences.
For travel professionals, the addition of these properties in Khao Lak provides new options for clients seeking a mix of beach relaxation and lifestyle amenities. The apartments, in particular, offer a compelling choice for extended stays, while the Moxy brand appeals to younger demographics and groups.
The development also underscores the growing importance of secondary destinations in Thailand, as travelers look beyond traditional hotspots like Phuket and Bangkok. With the airport expansion and improved infrastructure, Khao Lak is poised to become a significant player in the region's tourism landscape.
Marriott's partnership with KS Hotels and Resorts reflects a continued trend of hotel companies collaborating with local developers to expand their portfolios in high-potential areas. This approach allows for faster market entry and leverages local expertise in navigating regulatory and operational challenges.
As the travel industry recovers and evolves, such developments are likely to attract attention from tour operators and agents looking to diversify their offerings. The combination of a lifestyle brand like Moxy and the apartment concept positions Marriott well to capture a range of traveler segments in this emerging destination.
